Chinese pop-up Translation
Is it at all possible to create an add-on (much like the ones available for Google) that has a pop-up windiw that appears when you hover the mouse over a Chinese word (which has the pin yin and English translation), for those of us still learning Chinese?

Great idea. In the meanwhile you can copy and paste to Google Translate or Wenlin, etc. Or Pleco if they ever get a desktop version.

I was going to suggest a similar thing, but in the reverse direction:
Double-click on an English place or person name, and see the Chinese translation name, e.g. Zaccheus => 撒该
I also find it really cumbersome to look up dictionary definitions of unfamiliar English words. You double click on the word and then it takes forever to open the full Merriam-Webster dictionary. I've been spoiled by the light-weight "Define" feature built into iOS.

If you are using Mac/iOS devices, there is a built-in dictionary function by Apple. Here are the instructions to set up Chinese-English dictionary:
For Mac:
1. Click Launchpad, click Dictionary, when dictionary window pop-up, go to upper-left corner and click Dictionary.
2. Click Preferences, then choose the Simplified Chinese-English dictionary and other dictionaries you would like to use. Drag the Simplified Chinese-English dictionary to be your first order you prefer. Then close all the windows.
3. Click System Preference, Click Keyboard, choose Shortcuts, choose Services. Scroll down to Searching and click Look Up in Dictionary. Then set up the shortcuts keys you would like to use when you want to look up a word on your screen. (for example: control+D) Then close all windows.
4. Open Logos in your Mac, choose a book with English or Chinese, highlight a English or Chinese word, use the shortcut you just created(control+D) and you will see the Chinese or English translation window pop-up. The translation works for both English and Chinese words.

3. Open an English book in your Logos app, use your finger to hold on to a word you would like to look up, there will be a window pop-up, choose "Look up"
4. You will see the Chinese translation from the Oxford Chinese-English dictionary you downloaded.

Thank you for your prompt response.
1. I'm referring having this functionality as part of built-in functionality of Logos. I know similar function is available for iOS and Mac, but I would like to see the same function in the Windows version of Logos.
2. The iOS/Mac dictionary function still does not address the need to translate biblical names between languages, as biblical people and place names are typically not part of commercial dictionaries such as Oxford or Merriam-Webster.

You are welcome. To answer your questions:
1. Currently windows does not have built-in dictionary and there are many third-party Chinese dictionaries that support windows system (some are free to download and use.)
2. To translate into biblical names between languages will be a huge project to do because it will involve getting copyrights from publishers and other development issues. We are in the process of getting some biblical terms dictionaries in Chinese from Chinese publishers and you will be able to purchase these dictionaries in the future. However, as for the functionality you mentioned, we cannot tell you when it will become the reality.

Thanks for this. Although I don't have a Mac, my wife does. I currently use Logos app on my phone because I can cut and paste into Pleco，but it can be time consuming on a long passage but it's not a big deal.

You are welcome. If you are using iPhone, you can follow the instructions posted to have the translation right on the phone without 3rd party app. If you are using windows/android phone, then you need the 3rd party app like Pleco. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I also wrote Michael Love the owner of Pleco (before we had this thread) and he wrote me back a couple days ago and he had this to say:
"We actually already do this on Android through our “Screen Reader” function; have customized the integration for a few popular apps like WeChat and plan to do a lot more of them in the future. If Logos are interested in making it work in their app more seamlessly we’d be happy to talk to them.
On iOS there isn’t really a good way to make this sort of link from one app to another - we will shortly be adding a “Share” extension for Pleco, so you can easily pull up a Pleco definition on a piece of highlighted text, but that’s about as far as it’s possible to go on that.

Pleco Software"I don't know what they would charge, if anything, but it might be a way to help android phones at least have the same ability to translate Chinese without having to leave the app. and open the Pleco reader (or other application) for help with translation.

Thank you for contacting the owner of Pleco. I got the response from our developers and they currently don't have plan to implement the translation tools in the Logos yet. However, I am in the process of getting the Chinese-English dictionaries from publishers. Once they are available in the Logos, they will help you greatly when you use the Logos. Hi,
I am using Mac (Logos 6) but I find Logos suppresses this feature. For example, when you click the right mouse button, it will bring out the Mac default menu. However, when you do the same in Logos, it will bring out the Logos' menu.
I have already set up the shortcut. It works fine in other app but there is no response when I am using Logos. Is it a setting issue?

I am not sure now with Windows 10. But going back to the days when we were using Windows 98, there is a software called DrEye from Taiwan could do just as you described. Dr Eye is still around and I believe there is free trial that you could download.

Thank you for your inquiry. Currently Logos does not have translation function in Windows 10. You can go to Microsoft store to download some Chinese dictionary apps or use Cortana as dictionary: http://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-tip-use-cortanas-secret-dictionary/
