Probably a simple questions but there is a little triangle in the synchronization area of my dashboard on my Macbook (see image).

Does anyone know what that is?

It generally means that Synchronization did not complete successfully. This may be due to internet issues, Faithlife maintenance, or connection causes. If it occurs consistently, it indicates a problem, It usually goes away after a little while.

Isn't this when an exclamation mark appears inside the sync circle?

I don't recognise the triangle that Mike refers to

It looks like something associated with a dropdown but there is no text there to give a hint as to what it relates to

It seems to synchronize okay.  The triangle cannot be clicked on or hovered over to get any idea of what it is there for???

That triangle is what you see when there's not enough space to display all the shortcut icons. It's nothing to do with sync. It you click it it should scroll your shortcuts across. I don't know why it's displaying for you when you clearly have lots of space.
