SUGG: Group File Menu items by Type

Since my File menu is starting to get out of hand, the following change seems to make sense.

Could the different file types (Notes, Clippings, Visual Filters etc) be displayed in their groups? See mock-up below.

  1. Clicking "Notes" etc shows all the Note files, sorted with most recent first
  2. Clicking "Notes" no longer creates a new note file, but simply displays note files.
  3. A "Show All" item would provide access to the all-in-one view as we have at the moment.

[Y] This area is going to get really ugly after a while.

Yes please. The disorganization was fine when I only had a few files. But now after months of L4 use and importing of L3 stuff, it is quite overwhelming. I like this suggestion

This area is going to get really ugly after a while.

This is similar to my continuing concern about "snapshots"  [I used many Workspaces in L3)]-- these "small" areas of screen "real estate" do not allow for any type of "power" use. They look nice, but they really look as if they have been designed for very occasional users, rather than the heavy "professional" use so many on these Forums are used to.

"We" are already a very small % of Logos users.     Bob has said few others buy beyond their first "boxed" set (if that)  It also appears that our "heavier"  use (ie filling up these menus with user created items)  has really not been taken into account be designers.

They have made a beginning with the newer beta option of nesting within Favorites. More progress in this area is still called for. IF it can be done within the Favorite Menu, can it also not be done within the File Menu?

    Thanks for considering this

    Regards, SteveF

Hate to be the sour apple in the bunch but I really don't see the need for it. All I have to do if I want to group all the notes together is type "note" in the find box. All visual filters, reading plans, etc.  disappear and I can search only my notes. Using this find box has other benefits as well. For instance right now I'm studying the Atonement. I have an Atonement Clipping, an Atonement Note, and will probably have an atonement visual filter at some point. All I have to do is type atonement and I have filtered my list to those items.

Where I would love to see improvement here is to be able to combine a type and title filter. For instance if I type Note atonement my atonement note should come up.

Or if these were organized you could type "Atonement" and quickly see which notes have atonement in them. I'm not saying yours is a bad idea, but there certainly is a benefit to organization both on this menu and on the three-circle-icon drop down menu.

I definitely see the value of better organization in the three-circle-icon. Of course uniformity is great as you don't have to learn 50 different ways of doing things but one way that is repeated everywhere you go. So if a toggle button was given like in the library and collection windows that switched to a table view with a sortable "type" header, that may satisfy all.

A folder structure would be VERY helpful, with separate main folders
for Notes, Clippings, Exeg Guides, Passage Guides, Word Puzzles, etc.
Within each folder the default should be alphabetical. Users should
also be able to define their own subfolders within each main folder.
It would be GREAT to have Windows Explorer type interface, with each
file showing details such as Title, Type, Date Modified, SubFolder
Path, Rating, etc.  The user could click on the header column and sort according to that parameter.

Personally, a Sort by date would be more useful, so having different sort options would be helpful.

  • Good idea everyone. I reccomend tht all of these be put on hold, until after the missing fetures are implemented, and the bugs worked out of the current beta.

Lots of work to do, but so little time and human resources. Imagine what the product will look like a year from now.Logos Bible Software a [ap] to [ip].

I have made an entry for this at http://logos.uservoice.com/  Feel free to add comments to modify my proposed solution and to vote to move it up in the priorities.
