I am on Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon. Cinnamon version 5.07.

I am using wine installer 5.0.3 and wine package 5.0-3 ubuntu1.

Hi Henry, This version of wine is too old for Logos. I recommend 6.0.2 as the latest stable version or newer. There are are some issues with certain wine-devel or wine-staging releases because these are in effect alphas and betas. Otherwise go with the app image from the ferion script. That will not affect any other wine apps on your system. If you want the latest wine-devel which works well I think its 6.17. Current work is going towards trying to ensure wine 7 will be reliable when it comes out just after Christmas.

Thanks for the quick reply John. I didn't get a chance to check the message yesterday. Do you recommend uninstall and reinstall of Wine and Logos? If Wine 7 is going to be more stable then should I wait till then or does that make any difference? Sorry, I am limited when it comes to my knowledge of Linux. Thanks.

Your easiest option is to run the script again on choose to use the appimage. if you are distribution has it you could update wine via the package manager instead.

Hi John, just to clarify I am following the steps in the instructions below - is that right? Sorry, I am still getting my way around Linux.

    https://github.com/ferion11/LogosLinuxInstaller

and follow the instructions of this little video:

There is a small video of the installation using the <i>fast_install_AppImageWine_and_Logos.sh</i> [by clicking here]. You can download the latest release [CLICK HERE].

@ Capulo, Filipe Paes: Are you putting your mouse cursor right over the link or word you want to see? With my version of Linux (Wasta 20.04; Ubuntu derivative) and mouse (Microsoft Mobile Mouse 3500) I have to be off to the side a bit for the link to show it's active / ready to be clicked... It's something I've had to get used to, as I don't know any way to calibrate a mouse pointer. Maybe try moving your pointer around a bit to see if that works?

This is a known issue, as reported here - https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51984

John appears to have found the regression that caused the issue, hopefully it gets corrected soon.

    Hi John,

I have been installing, deleting, reinstalling, trying different scripts - none works.  Here's my problem.  Following the video and using fast install, everything goes well until the Logos starts I can login just fine, but when it begins to download resources, the fatal error shows up and I can't proceed.  Any ideas?  I'm on Mint 20.2 Cinnamon.  Thanks.

Jerry, your version of wine is too old. I recommend using the appImage install option. best wishes, John

For now you can roll back to an earlier version of wine, I think that bug was introduced in 6.23. On the telegram group I posted a 'patched' build of 6.23 which you can use. The fix will not arrive in any official packages until 7.0 final is released. The bug is still present in the release candidate.

    John,

I am another neophyte w/Linux and especially w/trying to download and set up Logos. My Linux distro is Ubuntu 20.04 and I have Wine 6.0.2 (should I be using 6.19?).

So, when I view the video that demonstrates Logos installation, at the beginning the contents of Download are, "Logos-x86.msi", "wine-staging-linux-x86-v5.11-f11-86_64.AppImage" and "wine32_bottle.tar.gz". (Is it significant that each filename is a different color?) I assume I need to have these files. And, if so, how do I get them?

Warning, this may only be the beginning of allaying my confusion. [;)]

    Hi Tim,

No worries, it can be a lot to learn. Wine 6.0.2 works ok by my recollection. In general people are better off using the appImage because it will be a prepackaged and carefully selected version which Daniel will have tested for stability and may have patched with bug fixes etc. The script downloads the appImage and the wine bottle during installation. The wine bottle is essentially a directory which contains windows apps and configuration. It is generally best to have one app in each wine bottle as they can require different configurations. The downloaded one is preconfigured for font smoothing and a few other things which makes Logos run nicely.

    I hope that helps?

    John

    Thanks John!

It's installed and seemed to work. Two issues though...

    - There's a process that kept on running underr Terminal. It seems to have stopped but I'm not sure what that's about. Is it OK to just shut Terminal down?

    - Now that I've closed Logos I don't know / can't seem to find where to go to open it again?

  • John Goodman
John Goodman Member Posts: 1,739 ✭✭✭

Open a terminal and go to

(From memory but you should find a folder with a similar name if not this. ~ is a shortcut which means home dir. e.g. /home/john

    cd ~/LogosBible_Linux_P

To create a shortcut, run ./Logos.sh shortcut

Wine processes sometimes linger for longer than you'd expect but they do usually terminate ok. If not, then closing the terminal should be fine.

    Hi Tim,

My struggles with creating a shortcut are found on page 62 of this thread. Maybe one of the suggestions there will help. Aside from that, there are some instructions on the ferion11 script page (in #23, way at the bottom), but I found them quite cryptic... I do have a shortcut in my Start menu now, but I can't tell you how I got it there... Maybe a restart is necessary?

I'm pleased you got it working. If you haven't found it yet, take a look at this page https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=39484 which will give you an idea of what works and what doesn't. The big problems are media playback (use the web app instead) and printing (copy and paste to libreoffice instead). Printing is pretty close to a fix, the media playback functionality is being worked on but will likely take longer. In both cases, the work around is easy enough. I use Logos on linux most days and rarely run into any issues.

    Hi John,

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your work on this! One question though: Would there be a way to edit the script so it will install the Verbum app instead of Logos? How should I go about that?

    Thank you and God bless!
    Brian

  • John Goodman
John Goodman Member Posts: 1,739 ✭✭✭

Brian, It's not entirely straightforward because you need to replace a lot of times 'Logos' with 'Verbum' but not always because of the way it handles some configuration. Different icon etc. Anyway, I have already done it.

You can find it here: https://github.com/jg00dman/LogosLinuxInstaller/blob/master/fast_install_AppImageWine_and_Verbum.sh

I haven't updated it for the latest version but if you replace the verbum version number you can have it install the latest. I was hoping Daniel would accept the pull request but not as yet.

    John,

You need to install winbind and cabextract. If you are using Ubuntu, an ubuntu-derivative, or a Debian-based system, run sudo apt install winbind cabextract.

Hopefully someone else will have the package name to satisfy the dependency of libjepg8.

If you haven't updated already I'm recommending Linux users don't upgrade to Logos 9.10. The menus update has caused the menus to be a bit glitchy. You can work around it by double clicking them but I guess most people might want to wait for a fix. We're working on it!

More exciting things are coming soon. E.g. Faithlife Assistant with Voice input works with Wine 7.0rc5-staging.

Video and Audio are closer than ever but still a work in progress but watch this space.

I am experiencing this 9.10 menu bug on my Linux setup. Annoying. It's very difficult to access the Guides menu. The Tools menu is not much better. Please report when a new version corrects this.

Double click followed by a single click should be pretty reliable at getting you there. You can also add items to your shortcut bar to make it easier in the short term.

I'm using regular arch linux and I got mine working by doing a minimal install first--indexing on the library especially during the install process seemed to bork things. I also tried installing both with native wine and the app image with the fast install and both seemed to work similarly. The current working version I have is with the app image.

I installed using the script and instructions on the GitHub using the Wine Bottle on Ubuntu 20.04. Everything looked like it was working, until Logos had downloaded about 30% of my books. Now, it immediately crashes every time I start Logos. Below is the crash output from the terminal. I tried the install on two separate computers running Ubuntu, and get the same result.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can try to fix it?

Hi Kevin, Its best to save the terminal output to a text file and add it as an attachment. It looks like it was cut short by the character limit of posts. In any case, to help you please can you let us know which version of Logos you installed and which version of wine you were running? If you are running from the ferion script then ./Logos.sh removeAllIndex might resolve it. However, the question would be why was there a problem in the first place? For which reason please do let us know the other details.

I used the latest fast_install_AppImageWine_and_Logos.sh script from GitHub, and let it install Wine/Logos for me. I'll try the removeAllIndex after work today.

I've also attached the complete terminal output. Thank you for your help!

Thanks, that clarifies a bit. You might do well to install wine from winehq with --install-recommends see here: https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu Go for the -devel option. It will just make sure all the dependencies are there. If you want to try running from wine7.0 rc 6 etc then you'd need to remove the wine AppImage from your data dir.

Wine 7.0 was just released. This contains a number of bug fixes and new features for Logos users over and above Wine 6. I would recommend it for all users but if you are upgrading then do a backup and I would recommend a fresh install. Or at least to rebuild all indexes. It is also worth saying that there is a problem with some of the main menus in Logos 9.10 onwards which we are still working out. For that reason I also recommend to stick with Logos 9.9 for now. If you want to use Logos 9.10 either double click those menus or turn off 'Allow window manager to control windows' in winecfg.

Following installation please ensure the LogosIndexer.exe is set to 'vista' and Logos.exe is set to 'win7' for best performance.

I just also want to say a big thanks to the informal team of users who have put a lot of work into making this possible. Notable shout outs to Rik, Daniel, Frank, Adam, Nick and Taylor (in no particular order) who have all put in quite a bit of time to this project. Join us on https://t.me/linux_logos

I removed the LogosBible_Linux_P folder, installed from winehq with --install-recommends (with the -devel option), and re-installed using the Logos install script, using the new version of wine, and Logos version 9.9.

It looks like Logos is still crashing at the same spot, while downloading resources. Attached is the terminal output.

    I'll try re-indexing next.

    Do you have libjpeg-turbo8 installed?

    sudo apt install libjpeg-turbo8

I removed the indexes and reindexed, and it worked!

If you are new to it, please use the ferion script. It does everything for you.

With respect, it seems to me that on this forum there is plenty of buzz about Logos for Linux. How many of your Logos users don't know this, and don't even know that Linux exists? And what about being a trailblazer? Do you have to wait for someone else before you try to make Logos available for Linux? I get that you are about the bottom line, but you know who controls Windows. You know who controls Mac. Don't you think that one day they will shut everything Christian down? And what will Christians do? Lose everything THEY invested into Logos, while you only concern yourself with YOUR investment. Perhaps you should think of the customers who made you wealthy, who want to break from these large multinational corporations. Is that even important to you?
If you trailblazed Logos for Linus, then maybe many more Christians would break from big tech permanently, with Logos leading the charge.

I pray wisdom, and not the bottom line drives your decision making.

As a retiree from IT, I don't want FL wasting it's time porting to Linux or building interfaces to external products. Linux has it's place but it is not as a competitor in the general user market. Interfaces have their place but they come with a high maintenance cost unless done solely via standardized formatting. As FL does not borrow money, I want them to concentrate their energies on meeting the needs of their core market -- and spending any surplus on supporting the churches in diaspora after being exiled from their Middle Eastern homes. I post this only to show that there are multiple opinions that FL has to take into consideration.

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

As a pastor of a cash strapped church, and as someone who invests in this tool. I think it is a great idea to get logos to work on linux and then start a ministry of refurbishing older computers installing this on them to send to impoverished areas with our country and around the world. But that is just me. I understand the costs and all and that is why i still have one windows computer. I just think it would be nice to be able to provide lower income ministries access to great tools without having to pay as much for it.
