Switching to Mac from PC hardware question

Hi all,

In God's grace, some friends have very kindly determined to give me a Christmas gift of a new Mac as they had seen me lose much time and productivity in the last year fixing my PC.  However, I am trying to determine what kind of specs are needed for running Logos functionally in the Mac Environment.

On a typical day I run Logos on my PC with Chrome open (20+ tabs sometimes) and Dragon Dictation Voice Recognition and Microsoft Office.  I imagine I will do the same on my future Mac.  Understanding this those of you who are more conversant with Mac"ese" please let me know in your opinion which of these will fit my needs best?  

MacBook Air, Macbook or Macbook Pro?

i5 or i7?  

more than 8 GB Ram?  

SSD or HDD?

Any other advice is welcome.

One big thing to look at is what is the number of your resources.

I have a 2015 Macbook Pro 15" because I wanted to have the i7 Quadcore 2.2GHz CPU.

16GB Ram, 256GB PCIe SSD, Retina screen.

I have about 5,082 resources now Logos runs great for me. I did a full index early today it took about 2 hours 20 mins.

I have about 20 tabs running and I use two link sets.

I use a MacBook Pro early 2011 with 8GB ram and a 500GB Samsung Evolution SSD running Logos 6, MS Office 2016, Safari {fewer tabs than you}, Mail, Adobe Photoshop Elements developing Raw-photos and sometimes Qgis preparing customized maps.

If you have enough money this specs should be the minimum for a long{er} time use {I hope using my Mac some years more}.

After a little time of getting accustomed to Mac OS you'll be happy with your new Computer.

I am using a 2015 Macbook Pro, 13 inch retina, 2.9 Ghz i5, 512 SSD, 16 GB RAM.

Quite satisfied. A complete index of 4500 resources takes about 3-4 hours.

I don't think any of the new Mac laptops have HDD's anymore, which is just as well, because a SSD is the single best hardware improvement one can make to make Logos run better.

I went with 16 GB of RAM because it's hard or impossible to upgrade RAM on Macbooks afterwards, but 8 GB is sufficient for Logos. I just wanted to "future-proof" a little bit.

From what I have heard all current Macs should give you a very satisfactory experience with the items you mentioned. You will want to get as much RAM as you can afford in your mac. 8 GB minimum although I have heard of people doing ok with less for optimal Logos operation I would go with that.

Note: PCIe-based flash storage in 2015 models is noticeably faster than 2014 flash storage (and SATA III SSD).

Macs eat RAM. I have 16GB RAM and in indexing Logos will gobble them all. This is temporary, but you'll want to use a program like Memory Monitor to get some back during or after indexing. 

I'm still using a HD on my Mac and the performance is still ok, but an SSD is desirable. 

Get the best screen you can as Logos invites intensive use.
