What is the difference between a new thread or a new post?
When should I use the new Thread?
When should I use the new Post?
Thanks
A new thread is what you started which was also the first post of the new thread. My response is a new post.
Whenever you would like to introduce a new topic. It is probably best not to hijack other people's threads with a new topic but rather to start a new thread.
A new post is used when you have something relevant to say in a current thread.
I hope all this helps. Let us know if you need any clarification.
I tried to answer you HERE. Did you lose track of it? Perhaps the reason you did, is because you asked a question in the wrong thread! [:P]
Arthur,
The answers you got are good. However, if you make a mistake while trying to follow the guidelines, don't worry. Even the most seasoned posters get sidetracked while posting.

OK How do I start a new Thread? I think I started this question by clicking on a "new post" Where is the new Thread?
If I click on ?-go to "View online Forums"- click on "General" and click "Write new post" that becomes a new Thread?
You have started multiple new threads. This is one of them. If you scroll to the top of the page you will see a post by you. That is what started this thread. Where the new thread is among the multiple forums depends upon which forum you selected from the menu that appeared when you clicked on "new post"
OK How do I start a new Thread? I think I started this question by clicking on a "new post" Where is the new Thread? You in fact did start a new thread (this one) when you clicked on "Write a New Post". I do not know why it says "post" but it does.
It says "post" because it is a post [:D]
You can either (write a) post in an existing thread, or start a new thread with a post, but either way it is still called a post. In fact, thinking about it, they are both new posts, you cannot by definition write an old post, although you can of course refer to an old post. And you can edit an existing post.
Imagine Post-It notes. I write my wife a note and put it on the door. That note is a post. Whenever one person writes and publishes their comments, that unit is a post. My wife sees my note/post, writes a reply, and sticks it to the bottom of my note. I might write her back something, and put it on the bottom of her note. There is now a "thread" ( a string?) of 3 notes. A thread is a list of connected posts. Each Post-It Note was a new post. But only the first one started a new thread.
If I decide to start a new string of notes on the door, I can do so, by just sticking a post away from the old thread. If I want to leave her a note on the refrigerator, I can do that too. Ideally, I will put things on the door that have to do with leaving the house and things on the refrigerator that have to do with groceries. Each of these is a different location that holds threads by topic. Forums are just places I can put threads of posts.
On community.logos.com. there are lots of forums: General, Logos 6, Logos 5, Suggestions, et cetera. In the forum "Suggestions," someone will make a post as a new thread about something they would like to see. Then other people will stick other posts about that same idea as replies to that thread. If they have a different idea, they should make their post the beginning of a new thread. If they have something which is not a suggestion, but a question about Logos 6, they should go to the appropriate forum. This is done imperfectly, but helps keep conversations straight.
When I click "New Post" on community.logos.com, it will ask my which of the forums I would like to post it in - it can't just go on the homepage, anymore than I can leave a sticky note on the whole house; it needs a specific location to live. When I have already selected a forum and click "Write a New Post," it will assume I want to put it in that forum. If I am on a particular thread and click "Reply," this will create a new post in that thread.
One quirk. I can't find them called "threads" anywhere on this website, although that is the name most users will employ, because it is the general internet term. They are called Topics on the Homepage (if you scroll to the bottom and see "Recent Topics," that is a list of threads.
Thanks for your help. I am a perfectionist (recovering!) When things don't show up as I would expect I get frustrated. In my thinking there should be a link that say "New Thread" But now I see how it works
