Speed on which Logos boots up

Why is it that Logos will boot up sometimes within 10 seconds and other times as much as 25 seconds? I'm booting up from a cold start in Windows 10 and it's bang bang pow and everything is there at incredible speed (SSD).

But though the speed is incredibly fast booting up in Windows, I'm getting various bootup times with Logos. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a logical answer as to why this unit might be doing this?

I don't really see what you are describing but one explanation could be that you are booting to different layouts at different times. Is that the case or are you always booting to the same thing - Homepage, Blank Layout, etc?

If you ensure diagnostic logging is enabled and then post logs after a "quick startup" and a "slow one" it might be possible to compare what is going on.

I've just started Logos by holding down the Control Key but didn't find any log file later than the 8th of this month. I'm going to attempt to send you that particular one.

I forgot to mention that I have a cef.log created today but not sure if that's what you need or not. Furthermore, I'd have to create a different log file each time I open Logos and that could take time. Reason being, I have no idea when it's going to be fast or slow. If you followed step 4 on the page I referenced above a new Logos.log file should be created automatically each time you start Logos.

It would be helpful to verify this is happening so you can upload it when you see that startup times are unusually slow.

Here's the Logos log file. As to how many times I actually reboot the computer, not very often. I do when updates come either from Microsoft and sometimes for Norton.

That would be normal. I've counted when I first got the SSD and it was 10-12 seconds. Several times, I've seen it go between 20-25 seconds. Doesn't that sound strange? Or do you see that much variance on your own system.

I'll boot it up often to see if it goes linger and when I see it doing that, I'll send you the Log. I realize I'm presenting something here that's difficult to see till I get a slow load. But as soon as I do, I'll post it to this thread. In the meantime, have you ever heard of this happening before?

Yes - there have been various occasions of people reporting longer than normal boot times, although I can't remember if it was intermittent with them.

First time after a reboot of the computer is usually slower than subsequent starts of Logos. I did a (boring) comparison of a slow start with one 13s quicker and the main difference was license checks "(licenses not changed, licenses not removed)". So keep your previous logs to enable comparison (rename logos.log after closing Logos). If you have a text editor, then you will also note that the text "Showing main window" gives the time and also has a much different line number (showing about 100 extra lines of activity in my case).

I just started Logos while watching the Task Manager / Performance Tab / Ethernet. I did it again to be sure.

There is internet activity when you first start logos. At least there is when it defaults to opening the 'home' page. I suspect that activity also happens even on a blank screen so that any content about sales, events, etc. is available when you do open the home page.

An extra ten seconds on internet traffic sounds like a lot... unless something is causing a slowdown.

For example:

Fresh boot and ethernet handshake (DHCP assignment and such) has not yet completed.
Internet connection is not really 'always on' and has to do network handshaking between your modem and your ISP.
Slow response of DNS Servers (I see this often enough that slow internet issues make me recommend using 8.8.8.8 as DNS Server to see if it improves).
General bandwidth clogs.
A few lost packets (even only 5%) can play havoc with a connection. If the request doesn't get there, the sender (you) has to wait until confirmation of the receipt doesn't show up (timeout) and try again.

I don't know that this is the problem but if you watch your Task Manager each time you load you may see a difference in how the traffic flows.

To get there on Windows 10:

type task manager in the 'search the web and windows' box
click on task manager
go to the performance tab
click on Ethernet in the left hand column to get the zoomed in graph.
Start logos.

From a layman's perspective, am I understanding from the last two postings that what I'm experiencing "might be" or "is" normal? Dean, I cannot get anything from the Ethernet in Taskmanager (disconnected) because I'm on wireless.

Also, next time I see what seems to be taking an extra long time to boot Logos up, permit me to post it here again and when indeed it does take 20 or more seconds, then you can get a better idea of what's going on. I wouldn't know what to do with myself if Logos started in 12 seconds on my PC.

I have SSD, dual core i5, 8 GB RAM, Windows 7, Webroot AV...I have tried all suggestions. Every other app is fast - even Photoshop and Illustrator. Logos has never been fast. Typical boot time for Logos is 55 seconds to 1:30...

Logos time stamp? Can you please explain that a bit further. Bill, what I'm looking at is the inconsistencies. Most times, I've got Logos up in about ten seconds taking another couple to load the page. Others I've counted with my Second Hand (Bulova Precision) and I've seen it go near 25 seconds. Booting up the computer (rebooting) is just a blur almost and Windows 10 is up.

Bill, loading layouts at startup will increase the time for the software to load.

I'm going to post a logos log file and mention that Logos is going about five seconds longer to load than normal. Other than wasting time for some I suppose, is there a reason it is slower at times? Also, it seems very much slower in opening even Dictionaries etc.

I should add, this report differs from the second hand on my watch. Not sure why, but try nearly a 10 second difference.

It's less to do with speed and more about "quality".

If a network message gets transmitted and corrupted in some way then it will be resent after an acknowledgement timer has expired - this could explain what is happening.

Typically, one would check this by looking at line counters for your modem (or Internet connection) and seeing if any errors are being shown.

But that is getting quite technical unless you understand how to diagnose network equipment.

And it may be nothing to do with the problem - hopefully someone else will have some suggestions.

Just phoned in my Server and they did a check for errors. They said, unlike Reuben who was unstable as water, everything here was as stable as the world that shall not be moved. Well, actually they didn't use any Biblical references but I am.

I'm still wondering if or why the Internet has anything to do with the computer booting up Logos. Usually, Logos is up in around 10 - 11 seconds. Then it might take several or so seconds for the page to load. Maybe you or someone else can clarify.

The connection between your computer and Logos servers (which is over the Internet) is used to exchange messages and information during boot (and at other times).

If there are network-transit delays this may cause some slowdown in performance - if your desktop app needs a server response before it can continue.

As I say, from your logs, it looks as though this may be happening in this case.
