Recommended Antivirus Program on Logos Machine?

I saw another thread about excluding Logos in the antivirus software and was going to post this there, but I've forgotten the link to the thread.

On my Logos machine, what would be the best antivirus software to use in order for it not to majorly slow down performance with Logos and my other school software (I'm running Logos on a Surface Book i7, 16GB RAM)?

1. I could stick with Windows Defender. Microsoft is also releasing a subscription service for Windows Defender called "Advanced Threat Protection" I've been considering, but it requires Windows 10 Enterprise, so I'd have to upgrade my copy of Windows.

2. When I purchased my Surface Book, Best Buy gave me a free copy of Webroot. Has anyone had any experience running Webroot on a machine running Logos, and is performance still OK with it?

3. My current AV vendor is Thirtyseven4. While I've always liked the company (they're Christian based), Thirtyseven4 managed to bring a high-end enterprise-grade workstation to its knees, so I've been concerned about running it on another machine.

What would offer me the best balance of performance and solid protection on a machine I run Logos on?

The built in Windows Defender in newer versions of Windows is all a typical user should need for security and takes minimal system resources. This along with following the number one security rule of making your everyday user account a non-admin account should keep you perfectly safe so long as you use a little common sense when out on the web.

These guys test anti virus software extremey thoroughly, and come up with different suggestions based on OS version, busines/personal use etc.

Personally, I've been running extremely well with Kaspersky Anti Virus (not: Kaspersky Internet Security, which comes way too overloaded with features).

Really dangerous thinking in today's world. People are hacking reputable sites and delivering viruses through advertising and other ways. No, you don't have to click on the advertisement, it installs directly from the site. Most recently, people visiting MSN were infected. Don't get too comfortable! They are trying to get MAC's too. Most recently, some Ransomware had to be squashed.

I use Norton and am very happy. Norton used to be a resource hog but those who still complain about it haven't used it in the last 5 years. Ultimately though, as you know, it really depends on your needs and configuration so it is really hard to recommend anything. I guess trying and seeing is the best way. I know, horrible answer, but it is from my experience.

I sometimes wonder if there is a consortium of antivirus companies creating virus' so we will be scared into purchasing their products.

The highest rated anti-virus program is a Russian based company. Could there be a conflict of interest here? Should full trust be given to any non-USA company? Should we be concerned about even our own USA based anti-virus program providers? (I'm not sure there are any USA based programmers)

Just a few nuggets for thought.

If you never pay for things or visit any financial institution online and store no Pii (Personally identifiable information) on your computer, you may not need to care. Your friends who get the virus from you might not be happy though. Do you pay Faithlife by mailing in a check? Use antivirus.

We should be concerned about the NSA, and not so much about USA based software companies who merely follow current legislation by sharing all customer data with them...

Anyway, I've been using that Russian anti virus for almost 15 years. They have my complete trust. It's not a cheap and badly translated piece of rubbish, but highest-standard and professional security software. What does it matter where it's coming from as long as its the best option?

(As long as it doesn't come from China, where by default all companies are patyly state-owned...)

I've been running Vipre for about 8 years now. One of its advantages in the past was that it was fast as well as reliable. I also ended up getting a 10 PC Lifetime Internet Security package for about 100 dollars or so during a Black Friday sale about 4 years ago. I don't think it is top of the pack, but it is good and reliable and I have not had virus problems.

Free Microsoft Essentials and avoid visiting weird websites. I've only paid twice in my life for AV software and none delivered. The worse one was Norton! McAffee is a pain once the subscription expires too.

I've used MS Defender for the last few versions of Windows. It's unobtrusive and seems to do the job well.

Some of the free ones have been good for a while but then turn into bloatware/borderline malware themselves.

I have never gotten a virus off the internet. I have several times off of other people's flash drives (and once, a photo CD. That one was a nightmare.) One of the best preventions is to disable autorun on newly inserted media like USB drives and CDs. That way you can scan it before it has a chance to do anything.

Based on my research of reviews over the past several years, the following tend to consistently receive the best ratings: Norton, Kaspersky, BitDefender, and Avast.

Personally I use Norton my PCs and Sophos free on my Mac.

One recommendation for improved performance is to have your AV ignore the Logos folder for on-demand scanning.

You don't have to visit dangerous sites to be at risk. Here's at least one way that this works:

- Malicious actor creates ad campaign (yes, there's a whole economic system around this malicious activity where it is profitable for them to pay for clicks)
- The ad that gets displayed leverages weaknesses in legitimate sites
- Legitimate site displays ads using an "ad feed" from a targeted marketing vendor (e.g. RocketFuel, formerly X+1)
- The targeted ad vendor recommends the malicious ad campaign
- Ad shows up in your browser and bad things ensue

The main point is that in years past, explicit action was required for malicious code to do something bad on your system (e.g. clicking a link in an email). This is no longer the case. Also, anyone who thinks that Macs aren't the target of malicious actors these days isn't paying attention. The downside of their increased popularity...

Use the A/V that comes from the operating system vendor. No for-pay solution is so much better that it's worth the price, and most of those solutions are demonstrably worse. This advice is limited to the systems used by individuals. There are other considerations in a business / enterprise environment.
