Problems With Microsoft Word Citation

I am experiencing the same problem. Very unfortunate timing for me, I have lots of homework to do. I spoke to someone over the phone and they recommended using MS Word on a PC, or using Libre Office for Mac. Libra Office is a free download. The Logos rep said that it works really well with their software.

In the meantime, I just uninstalled MS Office on my Mac and I am going to install an old version that I had saved from a few months ago. I will let you know if rolling backwards helps.

I will say - whether this is helpful at all - Word has worked flawless for me with this functionality - all the way back to Word 2008 for Mac. Seems like something has recently changed either with Logos or Word...

Well, bad news....its really hard to roll backwards on MS unless you use Time Machine on Mac OS X. I called Microsoft and they will get back to me on finding an older version.

Good news, the work around that if found is as follows.... Go to EDIT > Paste Special > Select Formatted Text (RTF) and it will paste just the way it always has.

I am going to try and do the Time Machine option next and see how that goes.

The problem is not with Logos, its an MS Office 2016 update. If you are using version 15.28, you'll run tin the problem.

The issue is the way that MS office is pasting from Logos. With the update to 15.28, the default Paste selection is HTML format, and that is what is causing the problem.

I restored MS Word from a time machine back up to 15.27 and things are back to normal. So, not sure what the permanent solution yet.

You can get to the Paste Special by going to the top menu and selecting EDIT > Paste Special > Then select Formatted Text (RTF)

There is also a shortcut for this in Mac MSWord 2016 which is crtl+cmnd+v. Unless Evernote has hijacked it, which it had in my case and I had to turn it off in Evernote. Any Word from Microsoft about making RTF default instead of HTML?

Going to try to restore previous version of Word. I would be interested in knowing if anyone hears back from Microsoft. Hesitant to download any future updates until that is reversed.

No word from Microsoft in terms of a change. I am in communication with a Office 365 tech support guy, he's not really sure how to change the default paste setting in MS Office for mac. All the web articles I have received are for MS Office in a PC. I didn't try the Mac shortcut but since I restored to an older version of word, I am not going to worry about it....for now.

The key to this whole problem is getting your Paste function to default to RTF. If there is a way to set that in MS Word, then we are golden. Or, Logos needs to write some code and have it work as HTML format (the new way it pastes after the MS update).

This is a big enough deal that I think Logos will work up a fix because there are a lot of people out there that are not as tech savvy. The citation function is so useful, I can't see Logos not adapting to the change. Especially with the number of people that have a Mac with Microsoft Office and use Word. After updates on my PC, everything works fine, no issues there.

So, for me, my short term solution is to go back one version in MS Word for Mac so I can finish my homework. After that, I will need to call Logos and Microsoft again. At the moment, both companies told me that there are not plans for change.

Has anyone from Faithflife acknowledged the issue?

It seems like the issue is on the Microsoft side. However, given Erick's comments, it seems like there could be a coding change on the Faithflife side that could be a workaround. Given there are several Logos users who are experiencing this - and given the fact that I doubt Microsoft will edit their code for future builds based solely on issues experienced by Logos users - it would be a blessing to be able to have this fixed so we can eventually update to future builds of Word and still enjoy this functionality.

If you need to turn citations on/off frequently, you can add shortcut buttons to your toolbar. This would allow you to leave citations on for the things that you do want to cite and then turn them off for your scripture references.

To do this, type "Set Copy Citations" (without the quotes) into the Command Bar and simply click and drag the results over to your toolbar.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I had already done these prior to posting.

My issue is one that was caused by an update in Microsoft office and not due to settings I tampered with or failed to change. I also want those citations on in the program for study and to not have to turn them on and off, they had never copied over before now.

It is now Logos 7 and the amount of money invested in this program by me and others is large. These are not things that extra money now spent for a new upgrade to Logos 7 are meant to have happened. New Programs should be less not more barriers to hurtle in my research or writing.

Can you expand on what you mean by wanting the citations on but for them not to be copied? Surely the purpose of the citations (when enabled) is to be copied?

If the issue is Mircosoft's, was it an intentional change on their part? Logos has an obligation to adjust to those changes that Microsoft notifies developers of but on other changes one needs to wait to see what Microsoft is going to do on unintentional changes. The onus is on Microsoft not Faithlife as I understand the situation.

It unfortunately took me several attempts and even a reinstallation of the Word program to realize all of this. Have a good rest of your weekend. Please do not consider this an actual fix or solution. Nothing has changed from my initial point of contact other than I wasted a portion of my Saturday afternoon trying to get a temporary fix to work that I already had access to.

Jon, this is not a temporary work around. The faithlife suggested macro is the same suggestion provided by the initial poster in a macro form. Hence, it is nothing new to the post and should not be stated as such.

The fact is I cannot copy and paste from Logos into Word with the previously available automatic footnotes. Copying in RTF does not solve that or the added reference data problem.

The problem began after a Microsoft update, not a Logos one.

Now, I could be completely misunderstanding the issue that it is presenting you. When I use it, with the assigned keystroke I gave it (Command + T, used the same one they used), it puts my footnotes down in a footnote at the bottom of the page on Word. I want to understand what the issue you're having is, because on my original post, which is HERE, this macro that was uploaded fixed the problem that I was having.

As for all of the extra footnote stuff there is a setting in Logos for that (this is completely separate from the macro thing).

If "Copy Footnotes" is turned on, it will copy all of the footnotes in the book or Bible that you're copying from, even using the Macro that the Logos person provided.

After the recent update build to Mac Word 2016, when I pasted into Word from L7, it defaulted to place the footnote information immediately following what I pasted in the main Word document (no formatted footnote).

The issue Nathan (or someone else reported) has to do with unwanted information that was being generated as a footnote or citation. I believe Philana's recognized the issue as one with Microsoft but that Faithlife is working to see if they can code something on their side to override the "new" default paste that Microsoft seems to have changed with their new builds.

You're issue was the same issue I was having, and I was confused as to what Nathan was experiencing. The macro workaround works for me. I think the issue Nathan was having was the setting in Logos that copies the footnotes that are within a book or other work in Logos. But, I'm not sure.

Have you tried opening Program Settings and changing "Copy Citations" to "Yes" and "Copy Footnotes" to "No"?

(You will still have to use Paste Special RTF on Word for Mac 2016, due to a Microsoft Word bug.)

Philana - thanks so much for putting this together. Unfortunately, I can't get it to work. I have it created as a macro, copied it to the Normal template, assigned Cmd+Option+V (unassigned previously), closed out of Word 2016 (Mac 15.30 build) and opened a new document.

Went in to L7 and copied a line from BDAG. Went back to my Word document (after pasting to TextEdit just to make sure it copied to the system clipboard) and ran my shortcut (Cmd+Option+V), and there is no response in Word. I have assigned several other keyboard strokes to double check, and it still doesn't produce anything.

Did I miss a step?

Additional Info - the macro runs great when I manually run it. For some reason, Word will not run it via any combination of keyboard strokes I assign..
