Doing an All Passage search of a person.

Hello,

I am new to Logos 6 and searching for info on how to do a search of a person in all Bible passages.

First, I would ask for any help on doing a forum search.  If I search for more than one word it just breaks the words down into letters and the results are nothing of use.  How do you search for multiple key words or phrase?

Back to my original question.  What I would like to know how to do, if possible, is search for all the verse references of a person, regardless of how many names they have gone by.  For instance, John Mark, John, Mark, or Peter, Simeon, and get back just the scripture verses of that individual in order to do a biographical study of that individual.  I've tried to do a Word study and an inline search of a translation but it only provides results for one given name and therefore every instance of anyone else by that name, for instance John.

I hope this makes sense. I am only looking to do this for all Bible verses, not other resources.

Any help would be a blessing. Thank you.

Ron

Hi Ronald - and welcome to the forums

The best option is to do a Google search - details at https://wiki.logos.com/Using_the_Forum#Searching_the_forum_using_Google

What I would like to know how to do, if possible, is search for all the verse references of a person, regardless of how many names they have gone by.

For this you could use a "People" search

To generate this, start typing "Mark" in the search box and then scroll down and choose from the options:

Or you could get this information from the Factbook (Tools -> Factbook)

Note that availability of these options depends on exactly what packages you have purchased so if you don't see them please post back and we can explore further

Hi Graham, thank you for the quick response. Apparently my academic package does not have these capabilities.  The people search comes back with 0 results and I do not have the Referred to As on the fact book.

Do you know of any other ways? I am thinking of upgrading, do you know if the Bronze package has these capabilities?

    Thanks agian.

  • I am thinking of upgrading, do you know if the Bronze package has these capabilities?

Logos wiki has => Upgrading to Logos 7

Bronze product default has Bronze library resources plus Full Feature Set. For features, an alternative is Logos Now membership.

And if it isn't clear from the link KS4J provided the answer is yes.

God bless you both for your service.

By the looks of it, I will be seeing you and KD4J around a lot on this forum!

    Thanks again,

To further clarify, the Bronze package by itself only provides resources, so you need Bronze + Full Feature Set OR Bronze + Starter Feature Set OR Bronze + Logos Now. But the Starter Feature Set by itself (or Logos Now) will do the job assuming you have one or two bibles like ESV, NRSV, NASB, NIV (2011), or KJV!

Well everyone, I have upgraded to the Logos 7 Bronze + Full feature set and I am still not able to do this kind of search.  I have tried both ways Graham mentioned and neither way seems to work.

Would anyone have any ideas of what resource it may be that provides for dual named person search? Or who I may be able to reach out to that could tell me what I need?

    Thank you

You have what you need (Bronze + Full Features). Has resource indexing completed? Have you restarted your computer?

Provide a screen shot of what you are attempting, noting that <Person xx> searches only work in bibles (Greek, Hebrew and certain English ones like Graham used e.g. ESV, LEB, NIV, KJV, NASB, NRSV).

Currently know of 36 Bibles that have results for <Person John Mark>

    Bible Languages: 17 English, 1 German, 15 Greek, 1 Latin, 2 Spanish

KS4J, Do you have to type it in exactly like that? <Person John Mark>  Or does it auto fill for you when you type in john mark?

If you type "mark" for example you get a range of options

Selecting "John Mark" gives you <Person John Mark>

This is what I get when I type in John Mark in a search.  If I scroll through the list I have no Person John Mark option

I get the same if I type Mark.

And this is what I get if I do it in the Fact Book.

The only John Mark I seem to be getting is this John Mark Reynolds

Okay, if I type it into a Bible search as <Person John Mark> I get the verses.  So why is it that?  Why aren't I getting the results you guys are?

But I still get nothing back in the Fact Book?

    Hi Ronald,

Presuming you're looking for all the times the person John who is called Mark is named, those are the results. These are instances where we have manually tagged the person who is said to have written the book of Mark is mentioned directly. That is as opposed to other people named Mark which is what you'll get in addition to John Mark when you do a search or "Mark" as opposed to <Person John Mark>

Yes, that is what I am wanting to do, partly.....so this gives me all the passages, but ONLY if I type it in manually, unlike others above like Graham, who seems to be able to type the name Mark and it will give him the results with John Mark as one of the options in the list, it doesn't give me John Mark in the search results.  Doing this for Simon Peter does not seem to work though.  If I type in <Person Simon Peter> in for a passage search I get 0 results.

The other thing that Graham seems to be able to do that I can't is a similar search in the Fact Book for John Mark, if you look above, he finds John Mark in the Fact Book but when I type in John Mark in any combination I get 4 results, none of which are for John Mark.

What I am attempting to do is figure out how to do a person study, or biographical study of an individual like John Mark or Simon Peter in both Bible passages and any resource in my library that has any info on that person.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, to everyone for all the input, we will eventually figure this out.

Is there any info I may not be providing that may help you help me? [:D]

Yes, Logos has him tagged as the person "Peter"

I don't know why you don't get the expected information in the dropdown.

Just to eliminate the possibility that somethings haven't downloaded properly please type the command "update resources" in the command window at the top of the program. This checks resources downloaded against licenced resouces and downloads any that are missing.

Well, I don't know what exactly the problems was, but I setup my new laptop yesterday and installed Logos on it, let it download and index, and all of the above features and functions that all of you shared with me are working great.  I actually have a lot of stuff showing up that wasn't on my old laptop.  Not sure what was going on with my old one because it said all resources were up to date.  The only thing I can think that caused a hiccup was non uninstalling the Logos 6 and then installing 7.  I just updated it from 6 to 7 when I bought the upgrade.  It should have worked fine but I have had things like that happen over the years.

Again thank you to everyone, and the lesson of the day, when all else fails uninstall and reinstall! [:D]
