NEW JERUSALEM BIBLE - THIS NEEDS A BIG PUSH!!!

I just received the HARDBACK COPY of this Bible a few days ago, and it is so awesome. I cannot say enough good things about this Bible. I love it. I have not had a chance to sit down and read it, but just glancing through it, and reading certain passages is wonderful. I absolutely love how it uses the names of God in the translation right where they should be. I also love how it groups the books into The Pentateuch, The Historical Books, The Wisdom Books, The Prophets, and the New Testament. There are also the books of Tobit, Judith, 1st and 2nd Maccabees, The Book of Wisdom, Baruch. It is absolutely wonderful.

Exodus 3:14 just stunned and rendered me speechless with reverence and awe for Yahweh! Instead of it being worded "I AM THAT I AM", The New Jerusalem Bible has it worded as "I am he who is." Wow! Powerful! That hit me so deep in my spirit, I have not gotten over it yet.

I can see now why my friend Dan Francis was lobbying so hard for this Bible to get into production.

I absolutely love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I rate it 5 stars and beyond!!!!!!!!!!!

MJ. once observed the strange difficulty one encounters with getting wide interest initiated in bibles despite Logos being a bible software program.

I am an early supporter for the NJB, but I have an ulterior motive for posting in this thread. My current project is to awaken support for two encyclopedias perhaps you've all noted the thread https://community.logos.com/forums/p/135700/881314.aspx#881314 Mattillo, I know you have.

I share your observation for the African proverb. My father in an early teaching moment during my childhood taught me "reciprocity is the basis for relationship and builds friendship." I never forgot that.

Four reasons to get the NJB complete.

1) The NJB is quite simply a literary masterpiece. It communicates the Bible in a way that is hard to explain I remember one protestant minster telling me back in the early 90's that it was the most accurate translation since the KJV... Now one can take that statement as you will, but the truth of the matter is the quality of the translation and poetic stylings make this a work that speaks to ones soul. Without the notes you are left with singing and no music. The notes explain things give valuable references.

2) The notes indeed the entire project was done primarily by scholars living in the Holy Land at the École Bibliotech living there offers them insights that can easily be missed by those from away.

3)This work is widely respected not only by Roman Catholics but also many protestant bodies and even in non-religious circles as a good Bible to study and use for reference.

4)While used by many it is written from a catholic perspective although very little dogma ever makes it into the notes, the authors took seriously the wider canon and refer to it. For example quite often Paul's virtual quoting of the wisdom of solomon is over looked. The NJB notes do make note of this... That is not to try to say Paul believed Wis. to be scripture but it is nice to see where some of his quotations are coming from.

The lack of this full edition in Logos feels much like an orchestra missing a violin. Logos functions well without it but there is definitely something missing, please consider getting it, it may be the best $16 you have spent to expand the breadth of your logos library. If you are protestant if gives you a solid look into catholic scholarship, if you are RC is gives you one of the finest study Bibles the Catholic Church has ever produced. The NJB is one of the most important translations of the 20th century. You may well have the readers edition of NJB in your Library but to give you an idea since you not familiar with it. Imagine the NIV Study Bible was published first and the the translation was excised out of it with the bare minimal notes.

This is the full text:

1 At many moments in the past and by many means, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets; 2 but in our time, the final days, ^a he has spoken to us in the person of his Son, ^b whom he appointed heir of all things ^c and through whom he made the ages. ^d 3 He is the reflection of God’s glory and bears the impress of God’s own being, ^e sustaining all things by his powerful command; and now that he has purged sins away, he has taken his seat at the right hand of the divine Majesty on high. 4 So he is now as far above the angels as the title which he has inherited is higher than their own name.

That's a big problem the U.K. Is one of the places it has it's biggest market, although I would dare say most of the English speaking world outside of the USA would consider it the default catholic choice for reading. The NAB is really only popular with American Catholics world wide the RSV (NRSV, somewhat as in Canada it is the preferred translation for the Catholic Church) or the JB/NJB Is considered the primary translation of choice. So not offering it internationally means you are aiming at the smallest market. I don't know his translation never took off better in the states it is one of the best translations out there, and it's notes are a gold mine of useful information. I can only hope that it can get made.

That is FL choice, Accordance has global distribution rights as does WORDsearch it is FL choice not to get international rights. Yes it requires two different contracts but it is very possible just depends on what FL wants to do, when I see the restrictions it feels to me that they feel a primary audience of North America and while that may well be it feels shortsighted.

Well, Dan, in your example, I'm not sure about note 'd'. But I suspect to use the translation, the notes are needed. Though I don't know if the two are independent, or related. I agree with Bruce, not sure who's doing the notes. I am signed, though cost inflation may overcome sign-uppers.

I did learn something I don't like about the Bible refs in your copy. I assume you copied raw text, and the forum software supplied the reference coding? If so, I'll have to see why iOS allowed an app to app pass-thru without asking the user.

Is Now available for all users of FL... although strangely enough the international edition does not appear to be available outside a package (searching i couldn't locate it unless it's because I am searching within north america????). I have both the USA edition and the international edition in my library because when i had purchased a verbum library upgrade it contained the international english edition.

'Catholic' resources are hard to get a handle on. Ditto Jewish. They don't seem to to stick within an assumed 'wall' of theology like protestants do.

MJ explained this a while back, and it went over my head (I'm not the smartest kid on the block, for sure).

Even yesterday for me, a varient reading in DR gave a clue to a much older argument I wanted data on. Interestingly, NJB didn't keep the varient.

I like Catholic and Jewish Bibles if there's good notes ... which seems to be the rule. Also, Catholic and jewish scholars uniformly good.

Like saying "Jews are good with money" or "Asians are great at math" your positive stereotype above I fear fails to be universally true. That said Catholics in particular who want to receive official approval (Nihil obstat [a certification by an official censor that a book is not objectionable on doctrinal or moral grounds.] and or Imprimatur [an official license by the Roman Catholic Church to print an ecclesiastical or religious book]) must not be outlandish although there are enough colourful bishops that that doesn't always hold true. And of course not every book a catholic scholar writes necessary receives such scrutiny or approval. A slight aside note back in Elizabethan times the Church of England had it's own Imprimatur.

I understand... I still maintain this is a serious omission in Logos library, but I grow tired of trying to get things published. They obviously think it important enough to offer but not important enough to put into Catholic packages or indeed all packages. Faithlife has also made this a hurdle hard to jump by not going after worldwide rights even though other software companies have global rights to distribution of NJB. I hope it gets made but its hard the PP system is less than ideal and like i said this one has hands tied behinds its back having none North Americans excluded even though globally they are the predominate users of this version.

Let me ask you: Is this available in Accordance? If it's there, I may get it through them. I also need the LBLA Spanish Bible in Accordance to start using their "Paper" feature more often, since it's got the ability to insert images and enlarge them by clicking on them. Very useful when presenting from the screen on a projector. I wish Logos would offer that in the Sermon Editor feature.

Don't give up. I was in for a while, and then gave up and withdrew my pledge. But I just got in on this one again. I am not Catholic, but I appreciate the NJB Bible text. The notes will be good addition to have too.
