What Tablet?

What Tablet would be best to study Logos?
I suffer from a painful Back and am best sitting on an armchair to study.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Colin

iPads are usually the benchmark for a tablet with Logos Bible app. You might want to consider using the tablet as a remote for accessing Logos 7 desktop in order to do more intensive work. The mobile app is getting better and better, but Logos on a PC or Mac is still preferable.
FWIW, Apple is expected to bring an updated line of iPads out fairly soon.

I have a Microsoft Surface Book. It runs Windows 10 and runs Logos in desktop mode. It can be run as a thin laptop. The storage is solid state disk, so it is very fast. The unit separates with the screen operating as a touch tablet on its own. The unit comes with a pen since the screen resolution is so high that a finger is many times too "fat".
The down side is that Logos desktop has not made any concessions to "touch tablet" mode. For one thing, this means that it can take a couple of extra actions in order to employ the "soft" keyboard in tablet mode.
The up side is that you would have all the capability of your desktop Logos available on the system.
I use my iPad for most of my reading. This is because I think it is easier to keep the notes organized on the tablets. I find it very clunky to direct a note to a non-existent or un-open note file on the desktop. This is simple on the tablet.
However, if you want to keep down the number of devices, then the Surface Book may be the way to go.

Hey Colin! Great question. Typically, if you're looking for a lighter version of the app meant to just read, you'd want to go with an iPad, or equivalent Android tablet, likely something in the Samsung family.
However, if you want the full Logos experience, you'll want to look into investing in a Microsoft Surface Pro. Since they run a full version of the Windows 10 operating system, this means you can install the full Logos software, and get access to all of your tools and books, both online and offline.0 -
I use my iPad for reading and my Desktop for primary study.
I don't own a Surface, but we have several at the office. If you can tolerate the smaller screen (or less screen real estate when you scale up to 150%), I would say that a Surface is the best of both worlds. No one has complained about their surface at work.

I believe it's rather dated now, but have been very happy with the Google Nexus 7 I got a few years back. It's an Android tablet that I use for reading on the subway. The Logos app is good for basic reading. It doesn't have anything near the functionality of the desktop application, though.

I haven't found any of the mobile apps to be good for serious study. To study, you need the desktop application. I use the mobile apps only for reading.
Before you spend a lot of money on an iPad Pro, please be aware that I have had very annoying intermittent problems with highlighting. It means that I don't use my iPad Pro any more for reading Logos books:

Unfortunately, Logos has so far not show interest in fixing this.

Take a look at the apps.... If the iOS app gives you all you need, an iPAD is ideal.... One thing to remember is that passage guide original language look up and most things other than basic reading requires a network connection. But you can accomplish a lot of basic study with your iPad or Android tablet. If you need the full app surface seems ideal. For me the iPad pro 9.7 works great.

I use an HP desktop with 3 monitors for Bible study and writing. I use an iPad Pro 12" for reading.
I was pleasantly surprised in February after buying a Microsoft Surface 4 Pro to use at
Morris Proctors Camp 1 & 2 in Atlanta. It worked great and after looking around the room at
lunch, it was mostly Apple laptops and Windows laptops. Only 2 of us showed up with
the Surface. The other guy was told by his computer guru son to buy the Surface and he
is just as happy as I am. I use a Bluetooth mouse instead of the surface of the keyboard.
Logos runs fast on it and I could keep up with the fast pace that Morris teaches these Camps.
Hope this helps.

I had a iPad and used it mostly for Logos. When I got a kindle fire for my kids I tried it with Logos and quickly got rid of the iPad because the kindle fire was plenty good enough. That my experience. I'd rather spend money on books than devices.

I have a Surface Pro that I am very happy with, it gives the full logos experience (even though the interface is not fully touch enabled)
I also have an iPhone so I have the app in iOS and a Nexus 7 Android tablet. I prefer the 7" form factor over the iPhone for using the Apps. I also prefer the Android over iOS for pricing since my tablet is mostly for reading (since the Surface Pro does my heavy lifting).
I had a Surface Pro I (like the one JoshinRI is selling) and it worked perfectly with Logos. The ONLY reason I upgraded to the Surface Pro 4 was because I needed a larger SSD since this is my primary computer.

Is it possible to install larger ssd? ...Or is it maxed out at 128?

I don't know about user installation of a larger SSD. But the Microsoft Store makes clear that larger SSD's are to be had (for a price, of course!).

Thanks for the info, Steve. Seems we keep bumping into each other on these tablet threads .... common interest, I reckon.

Paul, a common interest, indeed. My traveling companion is still the Asus Vivotab Note 8 you helped me find. Thank you! The Wacom stylus has given out, but the TouchMouse Pointer seems to be making up for some of what the stylus did.

I have moved up to the new model Venue 8 pro. (refurb) It now has Wacom technology, 4 GB ram, 64 Bit OS, a slightly quicker Atom processor, and full HD display. I still haven't pulled the trigger for the $30 optional stylus. As you say, touchmousepointer gets the job done.
May God continue to bless your studies.

I asked the local Microsoft Store about upgrading the SSD on my Surface Pro I and I was told that they were not upgradable. To get a larger SSD would require purchasing a new Pro. Of course, when I was in the cellular industry we were not trained on service issues and our commission structure was only based on sales of new units so that may have shaped the answer I received.

User SSD would depend on how it is made so many items these days are one board meaning if you want more ram or more storage in many cases must be what you purchase as upgrades are not possible. That said just did a quick search and on 2-4 of surfaces anyway the ssd can be upgraded. But not the ram.

I find my Surface Pro to be the best Logos experience that I have ever had, bar none. However, that is with a combination of the touchscreen and the detachable keyboard. Because Logos 7 is not touch friendly designed (a major flaw in my opinion), it is not as good using Logos in tablet mode. It is great for just reading in tablet mode, but not for in depth study without both the keyboard and touchscreen.
Using a tablet mode only format, I think the best you can do is the Logos app on an iPad.

You only need enough SSD sufficient to hold the data you plan to store. My library fits in 40GB. I don't have a lot of applications that take up lots of storage, so an SSD over 128GB is a wasted for me.
The RAM size is something else. 4GB RAM is really too small. 8GB RAM seems to be adequate on Windows 10 on my surface. I recently upgraded my work laptop to 16GB RAM. This allows more applications to run at the same time without excessive paging overhead. If you leave lots of windows open, you might consider more RAM, rather than more SSD.
RAM size -> performance
SSD size -> how much you can store without running out of space
This assumes that you are running SSD rather than rotating disk storage since the Microsoft Surface models employ SSD. Naturally, SSD provides much better performance than the older rotating disks.

Thank you all for your input. Truthfully I'm just window shopping ... kicking tires. I have a well stocked stable right now, But I like to keep abreast of the technology in case I run across an offer I can't refuse.
God Bless you all.

You can get a surface with a 1TB ssd from their website. However, you have to get the i7 processor and the 16GB ram. Price runs at $2600.
We have ordered at least one that big at work and it does run very well.

If I had one of those , It would be like driving a Lamboghini on a dirt road. Of course i want one almost to the point of coveting. But I really don't think i need to search that fast.

Paul, do you have the Venue 8 Pro 5855? If so, can you describe the performance of it and comment on the heat it generates?

Hi, Bill;
Yes, It's the 5855. It fills my "pocket portable" needs flawlessly. The Logos experience is improved on this unit. However, i must say the older one did a respectable job. Speed was not an issue. It would sometimes "stutter" just for a mili-second. This unit is much smoother/fluid. Undoubtedly due to double ram and faster processor. There is no heat issue at all. Even under heavy use, it remains cucumber cool. I am thrilled with the little machine. I do think the asking price is out of line. I don't have an issue with a refurbished unit. That brought it within my price range. ... ($225) The older Venue 8 was handed down to a nephew who sings it's praises. I only had $150 invested in it and used it for 3 years. It had Office included in that price. The 5855 does not, but OneNote is included in Windows 10. That's about all I used of the suite, anyway.
I hope this helps.

I would love to sell my original surface pro which is currently listed on ebay under joshinri. Everyone please pray someone will consider buying it from me at the very reasonable price listed there which comes with pen, typecover and case. Yes it could run hot but not hot enough to burn your hand...the Surface Pro 1 served me well and I now I am paying off the Surface Pro 3 I bought in its place...hopefully before Jesus returns. SP of any kind, even my I5 on sale on ebay, runs Logos 7.x well.

It does help, thanks. One more question. Are you able to scroll through windows in Logos using your fingers? Some of the less powerful Windows tablets don't have enough performance to allow windows to scroll smoothly in touch mode. Again, thanks.

Yes . No issues with scrolling. I think that's what I was referring to as stuttering with the older Venue. However, It seems to work better for me to set the columns to '1". Then the arrows at the bottom (and the blank space to the left and right of the text) act as page up or page down. There is limited text on any page, It just seems quicker. ...But if one chose to scroll...it will do it fine.Bill Anderson said:Are you able to scroll through windows in Logos using your fingers?
As a side note : Highlighting with the finger is much more managable with columns set to "1".
I know that you have experimented with tablets enough to know that the 8 inch models fall into a niche. They are wonderful in their place but struggle to replace a laptop. Conversely, One will struggle to put a laptop in a cargo pants pocket. I add this for those who have not done the time getting attempting to get Logos to cooperate in the touch environment.

I'm using Verbum on Android (smartphone) and an i7 pc (Win 7). The versions are completely different in capability and in performance. I have no idea what the Kindle version would look like or function as? Verbum doesn't give any insight or specs as to desired hardware, nor do they differentiate the performance enhancements in the PC version over the mobile versions.

The Amazon units do not allow access to Google Play. Thus the Verbum App needs to be side loaded.
It is a good unit just know its limits. [[I have a HDX 8 inch and use the 3 logos apps for reading only - not deap study]]

Just for the record, the Dell Venue 8 pro 5855 we've been discussing is a Windows 10 based unit. It accepts the full desktop version of logos/Verbum. You can store your complete library on the internal drive and have all the bells and whistles you enjoy on your PC, including working offline.

Hi, Paul,
Just for the record, I also have the Dell Venue 8 Pro 5855. My experience is identical to yours. Glad to see that it's working out so well for you. I purchased mine used on Swappa, and it came with the stylus. Both in excellent condition. The stylus makes the scrolling experience even better, but I can do just fine with my finger. I agree that the Dell is a bit overpriced, but it is also an improvement over the "old" Venue 8 Pro - which was pretty good in itself. With this Dell, you have the full desktop Logos/Verbum, in a very portable format.
Swappa is a good place to catch the occasional 5855 at good prices.

Josh, at a starting price of $250, your SP1 will never sell. If you want some comparable sale prices, Swappa is showing that the average sale price of the SP1 there is $156 with a recent high of $180.

I have a DVP 8 5855 coming. I'll probably need to delete the recovery partition on the eMMC in order to get more of the 64 GB available to me. My Logos data folder is 33.5 GB. If not, I may have to install on a fast micro SD card. I did that with the Asus Vivotab Note 8 I had a while back and it worked fine.

Try everything you can to get Logos on the main drive. I feel confident you will enjoy the machine. Please update us after you use it a bit.Bill Anderson said:I'll probably need to delete the recovery partition
My Logos file is 21.8G and I was able to install on the main drive without deleting the recovery partition and have 16.3G free If you install a pre-indexed copy, I'm sure you can make it work.

Hi, Bill,
You can copy the recovery partition to a flash drive before you delete it from your 5855. You'll need a flash drive that is compatible with the USB port on the 5855. I did that on mine.
My Verbum data folder is about 24 GB. I have Verbum installed on the eMMC. My 5855 has about 12 GB of free space. Mind you, I haven't installed very much else on the 5855 besides what comes with Windows 10. My microSD card is formatted NTFS so that I can install apps/programs on it. That helps. So, in your case space might be tight! Logos needs some free space for indexing, and Windows is not happy with a nearly-full main drive. Performance may take a hit. So, even though you are always better off installing Logos/Verbum on the main drive, you might be better off installing on a fast microSD card. If you get one of the fastest cards, performance will be close to the eMMC. You can try both ways and see which one works best for you.
Just my 2 cents, for what it's worth!

Hi! I think that the 5855 is a good solution for someone who wants the full functionality of Logos on a mobile platform. Compared to your Surface Pro, the 5855 is smaller and will run Logos more slowly. But it's not THAT slow. Everything works, whether or not you have online access. The display is nice (1920x1200, if memory serves me). You don't need the stylus, but if you get it, it works well on the 5855. Battery life, in my experience, runs around 6-8 hours, depending on what you're doing. You can format a microSD card as NTFS to install programs/apps there, if you wish, to save space on the eMMC for Logos.
If you do look into it, definitely find a used one in good condition. It's a bit overpriced, new. There are other 8 inch Windows tablets you can check out, too.

I received my Dell Venue 8 Pro 5855 and have installed Logos on a 128GB Lexar UHS-II microSDXC card. It is one of the fastest cards out there, but unfortunately the SD card reader in the 5855 limits the read/write speeds to less than half of the potential speeds of this card. Nevertheless, Logos runs fine on it -- when the program is not indexing. Start up takes a minute or so, but once in the program and with everything settled down, the tablet fulfills its intended purpose of being a mobile reading device that gives me access to all of my resources, including PBBs. Indexing is the biggest drag on the performance of the tablet. I'd like to try installing Logos on the internal eMMC, which according to Crystal Mark runs faster than the SD card. To do that I will need to delete the recovery partitions and, if I have calculated correctly, will leave me with only about 7GB free after installing Logos. That may not be enough leftover space and I am reticent to delete the recovery partitions.
