Hebrew Words and How They Are Translated in the NT

Hello all!

My goal is to search for a Hebrew word, in this instance חסד, and to analyze where these OT passages are cited in the NT. I would like to see how the NT translates this word (usually "eleos" from what I have seen).

I have searched through Carson's "Commentary on the NT Use of the OT," and I have a general idea, but I want to make sure that I don't miss anything.

Is there anyway to do this kind of search in Logos?

Hi Gregory,

Here is one way you can do it: 

Do a Bible search in OT only for: <Lemma = lbs/he/חֶ֫סֶד:2> AND {Label Intertext WHERE Corpus ~ "New Testament" AND Relationship ~ "Citation"}

I find only one passage Jer 9:24 and the part of the verse that is cited in 1 Corinthians 1:31 was not that which includes the lemma in the OT passage (in other words, it offers no translational evidence for your term).

If in the search above, you substitute "Allusion" for "Citation" you will find many more hits.

Allusions are not exact citations but may still reproduce the part of the verses that include your verse.

There may be a better or easier way of doing this, but that's what comes to mind.

BTW, if you want to find out where in the NT a particular OT text is cited or alluded to, open the Information pane and click in your verse. Look under "Other References" for a label that says "Intertext". It will tell you what the target is (e.g., Hebrews 4.4 for Genesis 2.2) and whether it is a citation or allusion. You can hover on the target reference to quickly see whether it includes the part of the verse that originally contained your lemma.

In case you have not done this yet and it would be useful to you, you can (1) consult the TDNT for this (go to eleos, find your hebrew lemma, then search it through TDNT) and (2) set the translation wheel to LXX in a Bible Word Study on your Hebrew lemma to see how it was rendered in the Greek translations of the OT.
