My Misguided Peeking at my Logos Library Book Count

So... do many of you do this also?
I go to Logos.com to order a book (for download, Logos 4, love the downloads!). So I find what I want, then see it's in a collection with a bunch of other stuff for only 10x the price so I click that instead.
Then I see "related" items, and several minutes and many dollars later, I click to place the order and then think, "Okay, now HOW am I going to pay for all this?" (This isn't my point here. I KNOW many of you do THIS! )
Then I do the download thing, restart Logos, update, start the re-index, etc.
->But what I REALLY can't wait to see is: HOW MUCH HAS MY LIBRARY BOOK COUNT GONE UP NOW?
If it goes up to the next hundred mark, I am thrilled. If it happens to push me to the next THOUSANDS mark (happens to all of us only 2, 3, or 4 times on the average), I AM ELATED!!!
***It is almost like I like that my book count went up MORE THAN I LIKE THE BOOKS THEMSELVES!***
Is that misguided or what???
But I do it. I suspect some of you do too.
I don't think this is a sin.... but it is very fleshy isn't it?
We can be such knuckleheads.

I almost missed this post - I was on the Logos website to check if any of my prepubs have moved from N/A to an estimated ship date, since I'm close to cresting another hundred marker.[;)]

I'm not sure if it's a sin or not...if it is I have sinned to the level of L4 Platinum. Take peace from the words of Paul
"For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me."

Guilty on all accounts. In fact just yesterday I reviewed an order that should be coming in the mail soon to see how many resources it will add to my library. In the original beta the only way to get a book count was to run a collection for rating:>=0. I was thrilled that the ability was so much easier then in 3.0. Logos knew what they were doing when they added the number to the Library filter box...

74 thousand books!! no way! Gotta be a typo. Man you need donations to support your other life. 74,000. I thought I was doing good close to 3000.
Yep I'm a peeker too. We all are, let's face it, buying books is great. how many of us used to and still do, walk into our studies and look at our finely displayed book shelves. I make sure all my hard copy books flow from the left to the right. Left being the taller books. Dust covers off and carefully cut and taped inside the front and back covers, all maticulously numbered as well, of course the heavy-hitters, Kittles, various theologies and primo commentaries are set so anyone can oh and awe. of course I'm usually the only one who notices and walks into my study. but I still get that chill everytime I look at a hard-earned set of commentaries. Now somebody needs to find out a way that our Logos books can be displayed so we can marvel and wonder why the cable bill or hydro bill got put on hold last month. Having said that, golf season is ready to begin in Canada and I suspect that a twelve-pack of books will be replaced with a twelve-pack of ProV 1's - NOT

Please don't tell me this was a con-job!! Because of the snap shot and his 74,000 books I just bought the Complete set of the NICOT and NICNT plus about 895.00 + extra resources so I could get on my way to 4000 books.
Rosie I know you're kidding right??? Please tell me you're kidding.

It wouldn't be too hard to copy a 7 and add it to the front of a reasonable 4,733 number in photoshop.
The easy way to know if it is possible would be to check the FTP site and see how many resources are currently available, and adjust the number from there.

Just curious - How are the user created resources counter?

Alas, I'm not kidding, and Dominick has as much as admitted his guilt: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/14081/108591.aspx#108591
But I don't think you'll regret owning the NICOT and NICNT sets. They are great resources.
If your motivation is to get up to 4000 books, I think that's a wrong motivation to buy books in Logos. Buy what resources you think will be helpful to you, and only if the costs makes sense within your disposable income. Don't get yourself into debt over this, and don't view it as a race to have more than the next guy (or gal).

of course you know that I'm joking - right? Not that dumb, I already own the NICOT etc. However I must say that was a pretty cool joke by the Dominator. Good one my friend. I'll race you to 4000

I thought his $8.95 cost for NICOT/NICNT made a lot of sense considering the regular price.

Perhaps they can change from displaying "posts" to "resources" in the forum...
... or an option to change from the standard Logos start-up chime to a welcoming voice announcement of "You've got 2,495 resources!"...
...or at checkout, messages like "Other customers padded their resource counts with additional good deals like..."...
... or each year, mail a customized bumper sticker (I bought 3,123 e-books from Logos.com, and all I got was this lousy sticker) [;)]
However, I realize that all this focus on resource count is badly mis-directed.
It's actually all about how many pages are in your libraries [<:o)]

It is supposed to work like this:
The more resources you have + more time actually reading them (& less time lurking the forums) = slower growth in post count.

I still have more resources (2861) than I have posts (2598), but not for long. I'm sure I will surpass my resource count in posts sometime during the 4.0c beta cycle. I do need to spend more time reading my books and less time perusing the catalogue for more to buy.

In the first week after I downloaded my first-ever Logos base package earlier this year, I looked adoringly at all the packages I didn't have, all the resources others in the forums did have, and all the resources I was determined to obtain.
In the second week of ownership of my first-ever Logos base package, I began to discern a competitive, "Keep up with the Joneses" spirit in me, which I didn't like and from which I began slowly to detach.
My approach to Logos is healthier now than it was in those first weeks, but I know the Joneses left their seed: When notice of today's resource update download arose in the lower right hand corner of my PC's monitor, a small, but not-so-still voice spoke, saying, "Look at all those MBs! I wonder if you're getting anything new? Maybe the Logos servers messed up and sent you BDAG, or ICNT, or MIC, KEY, or even MOUSE!..."
Continue to pray for me.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to be the pacesetter? We Joneses are exhausted!
btw: I really don't have 5000 resources. There are a few people who seem to have everything but we don't hear from them much. I must confess I have the same moments of self examination where I question my motives. But I can honestly say I enjoy Bible study more with Logos and enjoy sharing with others the many things I am learning. My wife was amazed watching the Passage guide work and likes the Bible People, Places & Things in Logos 4. Trading off creature comforts and temporal amusements for tools that help me study the Bible seems like a good trade to me.

Is this not the LOGOS NERD forum? I can't believe I am hearing so many people thinking exactly like I do. My friends are all drooling over iPads, and here I am spending WAY too much time drooling over things like the BDAG/HALOT bundle which I hope to have someday. [:$] Don't tell my wife please.

Matt, I must agree. Logos is my only hobby. When compared to the price of a fishing boat, reel, tackle, the gas to drive to various lakes, etc... I venture to say that while I may spend more upfront on Logos, it is a permanent resource, as opposed to fishing, or green fees and golf balls.
In Christ,
Dave

What if the resource count were the actual book count? That may really spur a "keeping up with the Joneses" (just a saying, Matthew and Nina [:)]) I really do not know how many books are in my Logos library, the point being driven home when I saw the total after the Calvin 500 download was some 36 or whatever less than I had anticipated.

I need a search operator to figure that one out. Dave H. seems to be the searchmeister. Any help with that one?

hey Dave, have you ever thought of taking a note pad or your lap top with you when your fishing. Just think of having a 'range' finder downloaded into your lap top while you look around at Gods' creation. just think of throwing out a PopR hoping and of course praying that a huge smally would smack that top water bait all the while parsing your NT passages. And if the fish aren't biteing, you could look for new resources to download while you troll in your new high-performance bass boat a shinny Skeeter 23 would be something eh? Not that I do that, but our Golden retriever is named "Skeeter" after the boat.
Now when it comes to golfing. wait a minute there. think of the stats you could enter with your lap top in your bag. Take it out and enter the appropiate scores into Excel, L4 running in the background, and at the end of each hole find out where you're at, par or under par. Now if you're golfing and it's busy, then of course you have time to wait between each hole. Humm, I wonder what you should do? Hey wait a tick. Why don't you serf on over to the new resources page and look, only look, at what's new. Now because you don't spend a lot of money on extra alcohol or nasty drugs, you do of course have money that you have already saved by not purchasing these things. What would Jesus do? I really think He would want you to a be good student of the Word who handles it accurately. Well, you can't do that if you don't have the appropriate Hebrew or Greek lexicons or dictionaries. I can almost hear him (note the small cap 'h') whispering ever so gently, go ahead, pull out the Visa and procure just one or maybeee two books.
Imagine reading the introductions or prefaces of these new downloaded books between each hole - ahhh golf is great, fishing is next, but downloading reigns supreme.
Enjoy the day.
BTW - anyone know of any new books coming out this Friday

I have a friend who has over 30,000 physical books in his personal library. The last time he moved he had to spend a lot of money just to strengthen the foundation of his house in order to support the weight. He was very proud that his books weighted so much.
My point is that this sin is much worst with physical books that with digital books. It’s hard to give a tour of your digital library and impress people with how much space it takes up.

I remember a forum thread from earlier this year in which participants with military sound-off precision declared their Logos resource counts. I also remember that as I read all the four digit responses, I felt a bit like Charlie Brown in the classic Halloween special, whose mournful “I got a rock” in the midst of his friends’ reports of lollipops and popcorn balls always struck me as both funny and tragic. When I couldn’t read others’ Logos census results without judging my own, I knew I had issues.
If you ask me how many funerals I’ve written (408), or how many years I have served my current congregation (25), I’ll tell you because I appreciate those numbers. But ask me how many Logos resources I have....
Logos is a great and immensely well done resource. But in all candor, some of us must confess to an excess of pride where our collections are concerned. We add resources or step up to new packages not because we need, but because we want; not because we need, but because we cannot resist the “madness” of such large discounts; not because we need (the resource), but we need (its effect on collection population).
I play video games. At the end of last year I unwrapped and installed a game I had purchased...twelve months earlier! Why had I bought the game at the end of ‘08? Because it was on sale – I mean on BIG sale. Why hadn’t I at least unwrapped it during that first year of ownership? Because I bought it because it was on sale – I mean BIG sale. In my home office as you read this are two games I bought at the end of ‘09, both still neatly ensconced in their plastic sheathing. Any bets as to when their wraps will come off?
Among our hundreds or thousands of Logos legions are books we will never read because for us, as for much of the culture we serve, size and bargains matter.
