Using Reading Plans in LogosNext beta

if I tap a reading plan on the homepage it opens a resource in a new tab - which is great.

If I tap it again, say the next day, another copy is opened in another tab.

What is the general policy about opening a resource when it is already open?

For the record, if it is undecided, I like this implementation.

With a Bible reading plan, for instance, it wouldn't be at all unusual for you to want your preferred bible open in one location in one tab and want to open your daily reading in a new tab.

Just this morning I wanted to find something I'd read in another book yesterday, so I opened my reading plan for that book and swiped back a couple of pages. I then wanted to continue reading through my plan later in the morning. Discovering that my first tab remained open was pretty cool.

Obviously having a ton of tabs open could be confusing for some, and someone did suggest adding a "close all" button to the tab view, which might make sense.

Good question. I would prefer it to not do so, but I understand reasons why others would think differently. I am just hoping for a quick fix to the problem of new tabs being opened with each reading (within a single day's reading plan).

There's other stuff that you may or may not see as related, though, which might sell the general idea of links always defaulting to opening a new tab:

If you follow a cross reference in a footnote (or any other hyperlink), it opens in a popup, but expanding it opens it in a new tab, meaning that you can view whatever is linked in it's full context without interrupting your existing tab at all, and you can keep it open to go back and forth.

I used to think that Olive Tree's system for viewing cross-references was the best one going (for the links that were tagged, which obviously is far less comprehensive), because you could see as much context as you liked in the pop-up window while preserving your position in the text.

With this update, though, I'd say Logos has beaten every competitor by miles - I can open multiple cross references, keep them all open and continually switch between them without having to zip around in my history or viewing in a small window, etc. It's really quite wonderful.

There's also the fact that if I open a verse from the verse picker on the home screen, it will open each instance in a new tab - if I listen to a sermon that darts between several texts, I can quickly open each reference and keep them all readily accessible at the drop of a hat. I'm not having to trawl through my history to get back to where I was.

Opening each instance of a reading plan is less useful than the above, and could be treated differently without me feeling like I'm losing out (my example in the previous post - of deliberately opening the same reading from the same plan in two tabs - is clearly unusual), but if it's an all-or-nothing approach, I really like the new "all".

FWIW, I don't like this behaviour. If you want to get back to where you were, you can always tap 'back'. That's much easier than going into the tab manager and closing the unnecessary tabs.

Logos also seems to open a new tab when you tap on "Done" after finishing a daily reading. So you end up with three Bible windows open. That's surely a bug.

This is my personal Faithlife account. On 1 March 2022, I started working for Faithlife, and have a new 'official' user account. Posts on this account shouldn't be taken as official Faithlife views!

    Definitely agree on that one!

Actually... If you are doing a multi-part reading (ie. McCheney Plan, 4 parts daily), it opens a new tab EVERY time you advance. For a 4 part plan, it will open 5 tabs (1 for each part, 1 when you click "done").

I just wanted to follow up on this with a specific case

I have a reading plan working through a resource that engages with NT Wright‘s Paul and the Faithfulness of God

As there are a lot of linked references to PFG I have set up a workspace with this book on on side and PFG on the other

However when hen I click on the reading plan on the home page a new workspace is created with just the book so I would need to setup the split screen again

I’ll probably end up working through the plan just in the workspace - and not from the homepage - but that removes some of the functionality.

Can we please have some more options, finer control, here?

    Thanks, Graham
