Looking for Pastoral Theology/Care texts used in seminaries/bible colleges

I have a paper coming up which asks me to compare and contrast a Lutheran pastoral theology text (that we use here at seminary) with a non-Lutheran pastoral care/theology text from a different denominational tradition (or one from a more global position).

I have Oden's 4 volumes of Classical Pastoral Care - but this is longer than what is needed (and wanted!) for the paper.

Are there any Logos produced resources which you used as a textbook in this area during your time in seminary/bible college that you could suggest?

Thank you for any and all suggestions,

Tom

I used Jay Adams which I don't believe is in Logos but we also Used John MacArthur's Pastoral Counseling which is.  He has a few in Logos I believe.  you can get it in his lifeworks collection for pretty cheap I believe.

I did not use any of these for a textbook in school, but Caring for Souls in the Moody Counseling Collection (11 Vols.) was written by one of my former professors, Harry Shields.  I suspect it and others in the collection may be helpful.

Hmm Sarcasm is my love language. Obviously I love you.

I have a paper coming up which asks me to compare and contrast a Lutheran pastoral theology text (that we use here at seminary) with a non-Lutheran pastoral care/theology text from a different denominational tradition (or one from a more global position).

Here are the required texts for Regent College's Pastoral Care class:

    • Andrew Purves, The Crucifixion of Ministry: Surrendering Our Ambitions to the Service of Christ (Downers Grove: IVP Books, 2007).

    • William Hulme, Dialogue in Despair: Pastoral Commentary on the Book of Job (Nashville: Abingdon Press, 1968).

    And the recommended reading:

    • Ray Anderson, The Shape of Practical Theology: Empowering Ministry with Theological Praxis (Downers Grove: InterVarsity Press, 2001).

    • Kenneth P. Mottran, Caring for those in Crisis: Facing Ethical Dilemmas with Patients and Families (Grand Rapids: Brazos Press, 2007).

    • Thomas C. Oden, Pastoral Theology: Essentials of Ministry (San Francisco: Harper & Row, 1983).

    • John Patton, Pastoral Care: An Essential Guide (Nashville: Abingdon Press, 2005).

    • Stevenson-Moessner A Primer in Pastoral Care (Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 2005).

    • David Wiersbe, The Dynamics of Pastoral Care (Grand Rapids: Baker, 2000).

    • T. Clinton and G. Ohlschlager, Competent Christian Counseling (Colorado Springs, CO.: Waterbrook Press, 2002).

    • Gary Collins, Christian Counseling (Waco, Texas: Word, 1980).

Unfortunately, most of these (except Oden) are not in Logos format. But see Logos's Product Guide for Christian Counseling: http://www.logos.com/counseling

Some others not mentioned on that list are:

I can't vouch for the quality of any of those works or whether they've been used in seminary pastoral care courses.

You could try Googling "pastoral care" seminary syllabus -- looks like there are a few good hits in such a search.

Gary Collins is a major figure, but I would also check out the guys at CCEF because they took the baton from Adams and have improved it in my opinion.

Ray Anderson, The Shape of Practical Theology: Empowering Ministry with Theological Praxis (Downers Grove: InterVarsity Press, 2001).

I just realized this one is available in Logos: http://www.logos.com/products/details/4532

Gary Collins, Christian Counseling (Waco, Texas: Word, 1980).

Collins IS available in Logos. I bought it a couple of months or so ago. I used it in my undergrad counseling courses.
