Visual Filter Label Search

Can someone please advise me on how to:

  1. Search a custom Label applied with a Visual Filter? ... or ...
  2. how to get all Authors that are [Humanists | Theologians | Philosophers | etc...]

I want to see the context [Humanism | Theology | Philosophy | etc...] of a paragraph, where an Author is mentioned, at a glance by Labeling the Author as [Humanist| Theologian | Philosopher | etc...] and context, if applicable, as [Humanism | Theology | Philosophy | etc...] and to be able to quickly search where that Author is mentioned using the contextmenu.

This would be of great help in reading Systematic Theology discussions.

Thanks for any help ...

I'm not sure I quite understand.

Custom Labels are applied with Highlights - these highlights can be searched for and a Visual Filter constructed based on that search string.

Is it that process you want help with or am I missing your point?

I created a Highliting style with a Label named "Humanist" and used it from a Visual Filter to find "Charles Hartshorne". The search {Label Humanist} doesn't return any hits.

I think I'm missing something in the searchterm.

Can you post a screenshot of your visual filter?

Also try finding a place in a resource where you have applied this highlight, right-click on it, scroll down the right side of the menu until you find the label, select that and then run a search on the resource (available on the left side of the menu)

Please post a screenshot showing the results

When I manually Highlight a term, select it, and right-click, I find a Label in the popup.

When I use a Visual Filter there is no option to search the Label.

Try running a Search on the Label and then "Save as Visual Filter"

EDIT: Sorry I don't think I was actually addressing your question.

I think the fact there is no label when you right-click on something exposed by a Visual Filter is that there is nothing "physical" in the resource so no Label to show. You haven't actually applied a highlight to the resource, you have just used a Visual Filter to highlight information.

Does that explain what you are seeing even if it doesn't give you the functionality you are looking for?

Why are you specifically hoping to see the Label in the popup at that point?

Yes, I see from your right click menu that you probably know all this but to clarify in my mind that we are talking the same language:

What you are showing here is text before and text after the selected text. To show us your label (a technical term in this context) we need to see the label portion of the highlighting document.

There is also the ability to search for highlights from which you could make a visual filter IIRC

A visual filter cannot add a label - only a highlight with its entry in a note file can do that.

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

Thank you Graham and MJ, this clarifies the issue.

I do now understand that I first need to manually find every instance I want and highlight it with the Labeled Highlighter.

When I use a Visual Filter there is no option to search the Label.

If you manually highlighted the text with that Label it could be that you turned off the Note file under Notes and Highlights in the resource's Visual filters menu.

If you did not manually highlight the text, a Visual Filter will not do it for you - it uses the style similar to Search highlights, and the label is not applied.

So if you have different highlighting styles e.g. Humanist, Theologian and Philosopher, you have to manually apply them to the text and the use of a Label is optional:

    • you can use  {Highlight Humanist} to search for all humanists you have highlighted.
    • you can use Hartshorne WITHIN {Highlight Humanist} to find  that humanist, particularly if there is a Hartshorne who is not a humanist and also to avoid using all combinations of the name e.g. "Charles Hartshorne", "C. Hartshorne", "Mr. Hartshorne"

If I wanted a Label (with a single highlight applied!) for Theology I would give it different attributes (Name, Type) so I could use searches like:

    • {Label Theology WHERE Name = Hartshorne AND Type = Humanist}
