logos 4 not scrolling using touchpad

This has been an ongoing issue. When L4 was released there were several threads about it. I assumed that my old laptop was to blame. 2 weeks ago I bought a new laptop---a huge leap forward in terms of technology--and I still cannot scroll in my windows. I think in one of the previous threads someone said it was a Windows problem and not a Logos problem. That is a response I have a hard time believing. I really wish that I could get my scrolling to work! After all, we have put people on the moon and now we are targeting Mars. Surely it's not too much to ask for scrolling in L4?! (Hey folks--not really complaining--I love L4!)

My understanding is that this is a known bug in Windows .NET/WPF affecting only laptops with Synaptics touchpads. It will have to wait for Microsoft to release a patch before Logos can encorporate it into an update. Logos is unable to work around it in the meantime. The bugfix was supposedly going to be available from Microsoft in March 2010.

Reading through all of that, it appears Microsoft has fixed something, but who knows whether it is in the latest release of WPF that Logos is building with. And furthermore, people are still complaining that the problem isn't fully fixed. Microsoft passes the buck to laptop manufacturer Lenovo, saying it's a bug in their driver, and that they've been notified of it. So it's completely out of Logos's control, and even apparently out of Microsoft's control now.

I know how aggravating it must be. But there's really nothing Logos can do about it to satisfy you. Software has gotten so complex that it builds on layers and layers of code, which is created by multiple different companies.

I guess until the powers that be (Microsoft perhaps with some pressure from Logos who doesn't have a whole lot of clout when it comes to getting the big behemoth to do anything) push Lenovo to fix this, you'll have to scroll with the PageUp/PageDown key or the scroll bar, or get an external mouse with a scroll wheel. Sorry. [:(]

Thanks for taking the time to give your thoughtful input. I do not know what a "Lenovo" is but my laptop has all of the latest technology built into it. It seems, to a simpleton like me, this should be a relatively easy fix, regardless of who is to "blame." This is of course not a deal breaker for me. I just thought getting a new laptop would solve my issue. Sadly, I was wrong!

Lenovo is a brand of Laptop, And no I don't have one, I have a Compaq Presario and a Hp laptop, it doesn't scroll on either of the laptops, my compaq has a Synaptics touchpad, not what the HP has.

If it were, they would have fixed it by now, because it is obviously very annoying to lots of people. Having worked in the software industry, I know that there are sometimes bugs that are really hard to get at and fix, especially when they relate to hardware and there are dependencies on other companies' software.

If you right click on the Logos icon, select properties, then select compatibility and check the box "run this program as an administrator" the scrolling works just fine. You will have to click an allow button every time you start Logos but I find this a small price to pay for the scrolling ability to work.

Dell XPS laptop with a touchpad, the flick scroll doesn't work, but at least with the dell touchpad driver, if you click both right and left buttons at the same time, you get the "center click" scroll".

Hey, that's great news! I'll try to get the word out to all the synaptics users who have posted about problems with this. However some might still be using Vista so they won't benefit from this fix, unless there's a comparable one for Vista as well.

Can you please provide some more info about which patch you applied (patch #, KB #, etc)? Did you download it from Microsoft site, or did you select it from Windows Update?

Peter, I may be bringing up false hopes. This may be only related to my hardware or something.

This was not a special download from Microsoft's website. It was from Windows Update (under optional updates). It did not have a KB number nor a patch number. But it had a driverid number within a hyperlink. The hyperlinks don't help me at all.

i'll try attach a screenshot with the paperclip...

p.s. since i installed one update at a time, i can say confidently that this was the one that made the touchpad work. After this update there were some .NET updates too, but that was definitely not what made it work for me.

I don't think it's going to be exclusive to Win7. I didn't get an update through the windows update applet, but I checked my computer manufacturer's website (dell) and they had just released a new synaptics driver. So I uninstalled the old one and installed the new one. After the requisite reboots, it appears that finger scrolling with the touchpad is working just fine!

I have a feeling this will depend on your Video card since the buffer will have to hold enough text and draw it fast enough using WPF to make the scrolling smooth. Fortunately with mine (Radeon HD 4670, 1GB RAM) It works well.

you have two options in this order:

1. Check with your computer manufacturer's site and look for the drivers section, see if there is an updated touchpad driver for your computer.

2. you can go to synaptics.com and check out their own driver, but please note the warning they post.

Usually what you download from your manufacturer's is a self-extracting install program. If it has the extension .exe or .msi it should install itself if you just double click on it. Doesn't matter where you downloaded it to on your computer. It will know where to install itself. Or did you download a .zip file?

Assuming it's in your downloads directory, you can simply extract it there (if it's a zip file) or run it from there (if it's an exe or msi).

If you extract it from a zip file, just enter the new directory it creates and find the setup.exe file and double click it.

Typically when a popup is blocked your browser will tell you (IE and Firefox do) and will give you an option to open the blocked window anyway.

As for the unzipped files, usually some dialog will pop up telling you where they are being unzipped to. Otherwise they may have been dumped to either:

A) the same directory the zipped file is in

a temp directory under c:\temp\zippedfilename\

C) something more like C:\Dell\Drivers\Synaptic or something along those lines.
