Animate text onto a slide as in PowerPoint

Is there a way to bring text into a slide with animation, after the slide first comes on screen?  I am thinking of what one can do with PowerPoint in this regard.

As well as if you import a PowerPoint presentation and give control to Powerpoint it will preserve your animations.
