A search for Innocent and Innocence provided some interesting consequences in Match all Word Forms because they come from the same stem i.e. a search for one will produce a match with the other unless Match all Word Forms is unticked.

Below are the results (# hits / #verses) from Bible Search of All Passages in 26 English Bibles:

Match All No Match All
Query Grid Verses Grid Verses
Innocent OR Innocence 3294 / 338 3304 / 1603 1601 / 337 1606 / 1557
Innocent AND Innocence 3294 / 338 3304 / 1603 12 / 2 12 / 6
Innocent**
1647 1652 1498 1503
Innocence** 1647 1652 103 103

** the numbers are the same for Match All because the words belong to the same stem.

The OR and AND queries unexpectedly produce the same results:

  • there are only 19 verses with multiple occurrences eg. 2 King 24:4 ESV has 2x innocent. This is easily seen with a search like innocent WITHIN 40 words innocence. So the AND results for Match All are erroneous.
  • the OR results for Match All are double what they should be (v3 gets this one right).

Compared above to more normal searches for Innocent and Guilty.

Match ALL No Match ALL
Query Grid Verses Grid Verses
Innocent OR guilty 3273 / 771 3279 / 3038 3113 / 755
3119 / 2885
Innocent AND guilty 315 / 41
318 / 143
306 / 41
309 / 142
Innocent
1647 1652 1498 1503
guilty 1626 1627 1615 1616

As for the hits being different between Grid and Verses this is due to one bible, NABWRNT (The New American) as the same differences are observed if you run the queries on that bible alone.

I prefer that the number of verses be the number of unique verses for all results, as per the Grid. But it seems consistent that each is stating the number of verses listed, so I would suggest that you show the number of verses in each bible

eg. The New American Bible  92 verses

The Good News Translation  94 verses
