Is anyone running Logos 3 resources exclusively (i.e., no L4 resources) on Logos 4? If so, how is it? Also, does the indexing thing happen when updating L3 resources?
I don't think that's possible unless you shut off internet connectivity completely. And you won't get any updates of any kind in that case. Otherwise Logos 4 will automatically update your resources to the latest versions which will be the Logos 4 format for most all the bibles and a good portion of the prime reference resources.
So is the proper procedure updating via L3, then porting these (or whatever you do) over to L4?
I don't understand the concept of using a free program, and having to pay for the resources; but when you use the free program, you get the resources for free. BTW, I encountered the situation you mentioned. I typed "Update Now" to get updated L3 resources, but it downloaded L4 resources, which I don't want.

You don't get any new resources for free. Just updated versions of the ones you already had licenses to.

Why not? They are the most recent versions. They have the fewest typos and are more compatible with Logos 4 functionality. If you want updated L3 resources you need to use L3's update scripts (much more painful), and those would only be used by L3. (L4 might see them but would then update them to L4 versions)
Logos 3 and Logos 4 have two separate resource directories, BTW--they don't share files. L4 might copy files from L3's resource directory if it sees new ones, but L3 is unaware of the L4 resource directory.
OK. It's making sense now. I don't have to pay to upgrade my resources to L4. I thought I did.
The reason I don't want the L4 resources is because of the indexing. I know it makes things faster, but at 95% CPU usage for hours, it's brutal on my laptop fan.

The indexing function belongs to the L4 program not the L4 resources. Running L4 resources in L3 does not creating additional L3 indexing.
Both L3 and L4 types of resources are indexed and will take equal amounts of time to index. L4 resources are smaller in size so they take less room on disk. Once you've indexed you won't need to index again until you buy a new resource, or get a resource update or a program update (I hear 4.0d will require a full reindex when it's available). But you can set Automatically Download Updates to off, and you won't get updates.
A decent laptop should be fine running at max CPU for hours, assuming you give it good ventilation.
OK. Thanks for the info.
BTW, what does the star icon underneath your photo mean? Several people have them.
Those people are the "stars" of Logos!
They're too modest to say that.

Logos MVP. Logos has has put stars on certain users that have been helping out in the forums answering questions. It helps you know that Logos thinks we might know something helpful. [:D]

You can click on the star to see a list of MVPs
Hi Todd,
Interesting that clicking the star takes me to a page that thinks the 12 of you are "items".
Anything special about "Logos and 12 followers"?
Reminds me of something ...
I hope one of you is not about to do something stupid ...

Ha, ha! [:D] Well, I don't know any of their middle names, but Martha J Smith, Bohuslav Wojnar, and Matthew C Jones are the only ones among us that have a prayer of being able to spell Judas with the letters of their names. All Bohuslav needs is a D in his middle name. Martha & Matthew would need a D and a U. EDIT: Richard DeRuiter isn't far off either. Just needs a J and an S. If his middle name were Joseph...
I'm the newest recruit, and I replaced Damian McGrath who stepped down. I wonder if that makes me Matthias and him.... no, I won't go there. He's still with us.
[:)]
A smile as I did not add one above. In case anyone misunderstand.
David, in case you are curious the L4 resources are smaller than L3 resources because the L3 resources have their own indexes. L4 resources don't need indexes because they are build by your computer
_______
Rosie, wasn't I the first MVP recruit after Damian stepped down? (It doesn't really matter, as long as they don't say it took two people to replace him [:)]) I was pretty surprised that you didn't get a star a lot faster than I because you post waaaaay more voluminously.

Kevin, But you have to first correct the raw scores to subtract posts about what herbs go best with what fish ... Oh wait - that might have been me that did that ... [:)]
No "u" in my name, [A] And I'd never equate Damian with Judas..............
I always thought the lottery was fixed and Matthias got the short end of the stick. Paul claims title of Apostle and we are told in Revelation there are twelve thrones for the twelve Apostles. That is going to leave somebody (Matthias?) standing on the sidelines.
Hmmm.. Matthew = Matthias; Matthias = Matthew. Kinda hononymical, isn't it?

Oh yes, I'd forgotten about that. I thought you and all the others were there from the beginning of the MVP program.
Maybe you had been on board with L4 from earlier on in the beta program (I only started as a beta tester 2 weeks before it shipped, so I was still coming up to speed getting to know the program for a while). And besides, volume of posts doesn't necessarily equate to quality of help given. I was a big contributor to the infamous "Hijack this thread" thread... [:)]
