Offline resources not working on iPhone/iPad

Hi

Since the Logos 8 update I have not been able to use resources I thought I had downloaded for offline use without an internet connection.  This really slows down the app and obviously means the app is useless when no phone data service is available.  How do I continue to use resources offline?

Thanks

Paul

    Hi Paul

Sorry to read that you are having troubles.

One of the ways we can help is by trying to replicate the problem on our personal devices.

Could you tell us what device you are using?

Are you using the lates version of the operating system? - If not is there a reason that you have delayed updating?

I've just tried this on my iPad - and while I can access downloaded resources it is very jumpy when scrolling through them.

Is this what you are seeing or can you not access the resources at all?

It's an issue on a brand new iPad mini 4 with iOS 12 and an iPhone 6s also with iOS 12.  For example I have the ESV as a downloaded resource but now, when offline, it is unable to operate at all, I'm unable even to go to a reference.

Yes, that is the effect that I get when using a downloaded resource while I have a data connection.  When I don't have a connection they just don't work at all.

    Hi Paul

I have just tried this on my iPhone.

While connected to my wi-fi the app seems to behave and scrolling progresses smoothly. (I have 'Scrolling View' on).

Turning Wi-fi off and relying on the data connection seems to have little effect.

Turning Airplane Mode on freezes the app as you describe.

Hopefully Faithlife techs will be having a look at this.

Accessing and reading downloaded resources should certainly work while offline. If they aren't, then there is a problem, and we want to fix it.

I've been trying to recreate the situation where turning Airplane Mode on freezes the app, but have been unsuccessful thus far. Mike, if this is easily reproducible, any additional steps you take would be helpful.

Paul, just to confirm information about the ESV. When you are offline and go to the Library, you see the ESV listed, and the "Info" button is filled in. Tapping on the "Info" button to see the Book Info, you will see a "Remove" button (not a "Download" button). Finally, at the bottom of that window, you will see some information about the version of the resource (there are two dates). Mine has two dates: 2018-10-23T17:14:05Z / 2018-10-11T19:19:33Z. Similar or different?

Not sure if this thread is still active, but I am now having an issue very similar to what Paul experiences. Now on the train in the morning, I cannot navigate ESB Bible whilst offline. If I turn on tethering to my iPhone, Logos on iPad(latest version) works as expected.

One additional note. I can scroll thru Resources while offline, but if I want to switch say from Acts to Rom 2:1 via entry in the top textwindow, it just doesn't happen and somewhat freezes. But, this makes the app useless as scrolling thru huge resources is not practical.

It is best to create your own thread, but we can help you out here.

I cannot navigate ESB Bible whilst offline.

My first suggestion would be to delete the ESB (ESV?) and redownload it to see if that makes a difference.

Yes this is still a problem.  Performance of the app when offline is now terrible and practically unusable. I assume that the app is now trying to do something which requires a connection even when using downloaded resources.

Faithlife folks - will this be looked at and fixed soon?  What's the plan?

    Thanks

    Not really additional steps Todd.

but on my I pad with the latest Test Flight Beta all seems to work well.

On my iPhone with WiFi turned off relocating in the ESV is slower with the wheel showing for a couple of seconds.

If I then add to the problem by additionally turning Airplane mode on then the ESV will not relocate, turning the Wifi button back on but remaining in Airplane mode does not solve the problem.

For what it's worth, I'm seeing the same problem with iOS devices using Logos 7.  Everything works fine until I go offline.  When offline, almost none of my downloaded library items are functional.  A few of them will display a very limited range of text, most of them appear to be completely unavailable.  I'm not sure when this issue began, because I don't use my devices offline very often, but on a trip this past week, I experienced problems with both my iPhone X and my iPad Pro.

I think you may have the solution - it seemed to work for me also.

Is this a bug in Logos or iOS?

Strictly speaking, Logos. Best I can tell, a backup/restore or migration from one device to another does not include the downloaded books from the first device. But the app still thinks they're downloaded and tries to treat them as such.

If there's a way to make sure those books/files can be included in backup/restore or migration, it would be great if FL enhanced the app to do that. That would yield the cleanest experience (IMO).

Absent that, the app needs some way to recognize that a book which is marked as downloaded isn't actually on the device and to gracefully deal with that situation (mark it as not downloaded; prompt the user to download; something).

    My $.02 ...

I did a restore on my iPad and iPhone over the last year I solved this issue by deleting the App and redownloading it. Thankfully on my iPad all my previously downloaded books started to redownload automatically, on my iPhone they did not and I had to manually select which ones to download again. I do know the program knows which items has been installed on your device as you see on the info windows on the desktop version. It would be nice if you could get a message saying it looks like this is a new installation would you like to download again the books you had install on iPhone 6? (Or some such option to the effect).

I just returned from a trip and experienced similar issues. ie in airplane mode in flight most downloaded resources were inaccessible in their normal way.  ie. Complete Word Study Dictionary (which is my default) changed to Oxford dictionary when double clicking on a word in ESV.  Didn't even know Oxford was a part of the package.

    Hi Ron

Welcome to the forums. There are many people here who will help when they can.

If you are really using Logos 8 mobile app; see the title of the forum, then there is likely to be very few still able to use that.

You might like to note that you have resurrected a thread, the last post to which is dated in January 2019 -- there are few who will be suffering a problem for so long.

Might I suggest that you start a new thread in the Logos 9 forum if you are using Logos 9 or a new thread in the Logos 8 forum if indeed you are really using that App.
