Hi everyone. I know, it’s me, public enemy no. 1 again. I’m sorry to ask this... as I realize it’s not exactly appropriate. But if I don’t ask, I certainly won’t receive. Yesterday had my infusion, but I’m getting sick again, which is becoming quite frustrating. They need brass rails and door nobs.

I’m hoping someone would be willing to gift me The Dead Sea Scrolls: A New Translation, by Abegg, Wise, and Cook.

I’ve was writing dead tree notes on the Dead Sea Scrolls (and maybe the Lexham Dead Sea Scroll Inter-linear, but yeah, I know the price…. If it weren’t for that barrier I wouldn’t be making this thread. For those who haven’t seen my gripes before, I’m not able to work due to a severely compromised immune system. Anyway, it’s extraordinarily difficult to try to patch together translation notes without an Inter-Linear DSS either, but theoretically it’s possible. I haven’t written notes on this with the pseudepigrapha yet, and I don’t think anyone is willing to gift me Charlesworth’s expensive edition so I’m not going to worry about that now.

Anyway, my notes are on what material can be repurposed for prayers. Obviously, I’m not going to be straying from orthodoxy here. (You know, the essential doctrines.) But there’s a lot of beautiful language in it which can be used and reworked. It will be a LOT easier to do this if I can have the ability to write digital, organized notes, along with copying text, and being able to check that my understanding of a word’s semantic range and/or at least knowing what that Hebrew/ Aramaic word actually IS, not just a guess based on the English. what I think it is, but that latter aspect would almost necessitate the Lexham inter-linear as well.

If anyone is willing to help me, I would be eternally grateful. My aim is to compile together material and rework it into prayers for myself and to share.

True, but you need to go through Denise to use her magic decoding ring which was included in the boxed version of Logos 3. Using it will make the application form for gifted books visible to you. It requires that you write a statement for each of the 40,000 or so denominations represented by Logos users stating that you will post nothing irritating to their beliefs. It also requires all your email account addresses for the next 387 years, in case you violate step 1 and your access needs to be revoked. Once the working committee of 144,000 has approved your request, the invisible seal of approval will be added to your post and forum users will be free to purchase this item for you. At least, I think that's how it works ... it happens so rarely some details may have slipped my mind - o yeah, like to restart your computer step for whatever computer you might be on when the application is approved.

I'd like to say yes. Though the forum guidelines do not speak to the secret decoder rings (else it wouldn't secret), it does prohibit using the forum to gift Logos products. I'm not sure, however, what's included in the invisable text at the bottom of the guidelines.

I've never understood the no-gifts ban ... "Those darn Christians keep giving each other 'books'! How will we ever make money?"

My apologies, Chris .. I was referring the decoder ring. My DSS resources are of my favorites, primarily the Zedokite Fragments that also appeared in Cairo earlier. I can't imagine constructing sectarian prayers, but maybe I'm too 2nd Temple-ish.

Perhaps, the wisest course of action would be to set up a 'Just Giving' page and then ask friends, family, and church family to make a contribution towards the cost of the volume.

That way,

No one individual is having to shoulder the entire cost
You can set the giving total based on what you really need, not just bare minimums.
those closest to you will naturally be more supportive of your work than strangers on the internet
If you can convince your church leaders and local congregation of the value of your project then I am sure they'd be more willing contribute knowing that it will benefit both you and them in the long term.

Having set up the page, (any guidelines notwithstanding) they'd be nothing stopping you sharing a link here too.

many people come out of foster-care or living-on-the-streets with little ability to allow people to be close to them; or with a normal upbringing, their mental health issues have alienated them.
the handful who are close have often had to step in so often that the person is embarrassed to admit they are so far down they need help again
they may have conditions that keep them semi-housebound which further loosens what links they might have
they have no church affiliation or keep a very low profile because most church congregations are fairly homogeneous and they don't fit in / become "invisible"

Hi MJ, I always appreciate it when you take the time to contribute to a thread in this way. And this is no exception.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I wasn't suggesting a one-size-fits-all approach and, if my post came across that way, that was not my intention.

Godly wisdom always operates on an 'all things being equal, the situation is applicable, and the variables are correct then do X' basis.

It seemed to me that the OP was perhaps concerned that their request might not fall on receptive ears, in which case I was trying to encourage them to consider other perspectives/avenues. That's all.

Thank you for the timely reminder that not every approach works for every individual, which, is itself, a wise observation.
