HIGHLIGHTING TO VISUAL FILTER?

Hello Everyone.

Through the years, highlighting "files" and visual filter "files" have changed so much, that I have some of my inductive files as highlighting palettes and some as visual filters (my error I know, but the lines have always been blurry to me until recently.)

Anyway, I have a visual filter that I'd love to make a highlighting palette. Is there an easy way to do that?

I'm a little fuzzy as to what you are trying to accomplish, as a Visual Filter will only use your highlighting palettes/styles. But it seems that a Visual Filter will retain a style if it is no longer in the Highlighting tool. To recreate that palette/style, you would have to guess its attributes from its appearance.

Or did you want to create Highlights in the resource and then delete the Visual Filter? You would have to manually apply the Highlights, which would be very tedious.

Good points. I guess I was thinking of it more from the perspective of having the visual filter "file" (i.e. Palette) as an option on the highlighting tool for reference, more than anything. Also, when studying inductively, while I may have book key words, I will also have chapter key words, so a visual filter won't work well for me personally for that because then I'd have to make visual filters for the entire book, then chapter 1, chapter 2, etc., etc. In those instances, I create a visual filter for my book key words and then I apply my chapter key word highlights (and sometimes even questions and tiny word notes as shown below) using the highlight palette individually as I'm studying. Clear as mud, right? [:D]

I guess that's part of my problem, I'm always using this program a bit different than most, I think. All that being said, I am still VERY VERY happy with Logos 8.

I can understand that Why?, Explanation + Question, Answer and their associated number would have to be applied as highlights when studying. The use of VF's for key words would have to balance convenience and purpose e.g. have one VF for key words that would apply to the entire book (or bible). You can add new key words as you study (if a word doesn't appear in a chapter/book it can't be highlighted!). The balance is whether you want certain key words to always be highlighted.

As to your first question, I guess my thinking is that I like to have a file that shows the words I've highlighted or are considering to highlight in a particular book. When I do this manually, I actually keep an index card that shows what I highlighted and the symbol I used. I show the book highlights, and then what key words I marked for each chapter as the chapter keywords.

As to your comment regarding the "balance," I see you completely understand what I'm trying to achieve there. You're right...the balance is never easy to achieve.

I guess my thinking is that I like to have a file that shows the words I've highlighted or are considering to highlight in a particular book. When I do this manually, I actually keep an index card that shows what I highlighted and the symbol I used. I show the book highlights, and then what key words I marked for each chapter as the chapter keywords.

I would start with a empty VF for the keywords in a book and have that open when I study each chapter. Add words as necessary to the VF (they should highlight automatically). Then manually highlight chapter keywords. As you proceed to the next chapter, the book keywords are highlighted via the VF and you can concentrate on chapter keywords, whilst also adding words to the VF for the book. If you have an overwhelming number of keywords for the chapter, create a VF for them, instead of manually highlighting (but beware of having too many VF's for performance reasons).

The problem comes when you decide that a word is no longer a keyword for the book. A Bible Search for the word will show you where it occurs, and you can decide if/where you want to manually highlight it. Then remove it from the VF for the book.

Remember that alternate forms of a word can easily be managed in a VF e.g.

God, God's Style 1

faith Style 2

hope Style 3

judge, judgement Style 4

The problem with "God" is not to highlight "god", so you could put that in another VF and turn on "Match Case".
