the new version only runs on OS 10.11is there any work around?
I think the only thing you can do is to upgrade the iMac to 10.11. If it is 2007 or later, you can do so. Here's Apple's webpage on how to download and upgrade to 10.11 -- https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206886
