ATTN: TL Putnam - Request for additional basic history (or other works of Bernard McGinn)
We have had the magnificent Old, Hughes Oliphant. The Reading and Preaching of the Scriptures in the Worship of the Christian Church.series for some time now. It is now time to fill another glaring hole in our historical coverage - Bernard McGinn's The Presence of God series. This provides a background for the Western Spirituality series, provides accurate information with those who mistakenly equate the mystical with the occult, and generally promotes Verbum as providing for a wide swath of Catholic/Orthodox (and other) users. Volumes include:
- The Foundations of Mysticism: Origins to the Fifth Century
- The Growth of Mysticism: Gregory the Great Through the 12th Century
- The Flowering of Mysticism: Men and Women in the New Mysticism 1200-1350
- The Harvest of Mysticism in Medieval Germany
- The Varieties of Vernacular Mysticism 1350-1550
- Mysticism in the Gold Age of Spain (1500-1650)
- The Persistence of Mysticism in Catholic Europe: France, Italy, and Germany 1500-1675
- Mysticism in the Reformation (1500-1650) Part I
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."
