Help with Forum Software

Is there some place that describes how this forum software operates. How are quotes added to reply messages, Why is a reply to a specific message not associated with that message (something like the old newsgroup??).  I'm about ready to quit reading this forum as finding what I might be interested in reading is difficult. How do search functions work.

Most of all:  Where is the help for this forum?  Nothing about how it works int he wiki files.  I'm wiling to use help files when they exist.

Just frustrated

Thanks!

Wayne as for being able to add quotes, click the reply button in the upper right hand corner, not the "quick reply" link. Then if you click the blue "Quote" hyperlink it put the post you are replying to in your current post. Also click the "More" button for other options....

Also, the "replied" link next to the user's name is a link back to the post that user replied to:

But it's always best to quote the message you're replying to (as describe by Frank above), so that one doesn't have to read backwards in the thread.

Most of us do not use the search functions that are built into the forum software - we use Google.  Format your search in Google like this:

         term1 term2 term3 ... site:community.logos.com

You can have as many search terms as needed, just end the query with the "site..." term shown above.

In addition to Frank's instructions, if you select a portion of the original text prior to clicking "Quote", only the selected material will be quoted in the new message.

started a wiki page: Using the Forum

Thanks, Steve. I've added a whole section to it on Searching for posts which explains the minimal functionality that the forum search has and then proceeds to recommend Google as a better option (and how to search the forums specifically using Google).

I've also linked it in to the main wiki page because it was an orphan. Hope you weren't intentionally keeping it not-linked in until you'd finished it. There's certainly more that could be documented about the forum (Sorting and Filtering, etc.). But it's useful enough already that I thought it should be accessible. I've marked it new! too. You can change that to updated! if you decide to develop the page further.

Great! i was hoping others would flesh this out.

Good. I was kinda lost in figuring out where to link it in. i vaguely remember that you or someone else built other pages which would be associated with this (e.g. how to change your name, how to add screenshots, etc)

    I've marked it new! too.

i think New is the best, since it hasn't been visible to many.

    Thanks

Oh yes, thanks for reminding me about my Change Forum Display Name page. I've now linked it in, and the Screenshot page which I hadn't been aware of until you mentioned it. It needs a bit of work still.

My image of the controls on the top of the Forum search results page lacks the nice red numbered labels that you do on yours, which kind of breaks the consistent look and feel of the wiki page. I'm working on my laptop for now until I manage to repair my main computer, so I don't have access to my good screenshot annotation tools (mainly SnagIt).

Sam, I've explained it in some more detail here: http://wiki.logos.com/Using_the_Forum#Searching_for_posts

The term site:community.logos.com does not have to be the last term on the search line, it can be anywhere. Note that there must not be a space after the colon.
