Chapter 2
Losing Your First Love
Revelation 2:1–7This section begins the “things which are.” The messages to the churches have a three-fold meaning. Each has a primary association, having a local and direct bearing upon the church to which it was written. Each of the letters also has a personal application, their message applying to every Christian. Each church individually and the seven churches combined set forth prophetic anticipation as we look forward to the Rapture of the Church. The problems that took place in these churches are the same problems that the Church faces today. The first church addressed is the church at Ephesus. It was the first one on the postal route but also the most prominent church of the seven. This was the mother church out of whose ministry the other six churches were started (Acts 19:10). The contents of this letter form a pattern for the letters to the other six churches.
Four decades have passed since this church has been started. Paul and many of the people converted under his ministry are gone. There is a new atmosphere in this church which the Lord wants to address through His servant John. Let’s get our spiritual shovels and dig for some treasures from Scripture in this chapter.
I. THE AUDIENCE OR ASSEMBLY
Ephesus was a strategic city, the seacoast capital of proconsular Asia, and was one of the greatest religious, political, and commercial centers of the region.A. Commercially
Ephesus lay at the mouth of the Cayster River (in the country of Turkey). This river flowed fast and tended to silt up. They kept it clean in order to have a great harbor. They eventually lost the battle with the silt. The ruins of Ephesus are now located some six miles inland from the sea. When people disembarked at the harbor, they traveled to the center of the city along a beautiful, wide road lined with columns. This road was called the Arcadian Way.Three trade routes converged in Ephesus: One from the Euphrates River (East); One from Galatia (Asia Minor); One from the Maender Valley (South). This city had an active business climate with a population at this time of one quarter to a half a million people.
B. Politically
The city had the title of Supreme Metropolis of Asia. It was a free, self-governed city in the Roman Empire. There were no Roman troops stationed here. When a Roman governor entered Asia, he, by law, had to enter Asia through Ephesus. Ephesus was considered an assize town which made it an important judicial center. The Roman governors would try important cases in these towns; Ephesus being one of them. Ephesus was very familiar with the pomp and splendor of Rome when these governors would arrive at the city. Ephesus was also the center for the Panimonian Games which were ranked with the Olympic Games. These games were held in the month of May. The Greeks called this month Artemesion, the month sacred to Artemis or Diana.C. Religiously
It was the location of the Temple of Diana or Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the world. Women gladly offered their jewels for the construction of this temple. It was 425 feet long, 220 feet wide, and 60 feet high. Only the center was roofed in with cedarwood while its great folding doors were made of cypress. A stairway that led up to the roof was said to have been cut from one gigantic vine from the island of Cypress. The temple was adorned with 127 parian marble pillars, each pillar being a gift from a king. Thirty-six of the pillars were overlaid with gold, jewels, and intricate carvings.The worship of Diana was very vile and perverse. Her idol or image was a many-breasted woman which was believed to have fallen from heaven (Acts 19:35). Her temple was attended by priests, slaves, and thousands of women who served as ritual prostitutes. Sex was part of the worship of Diana. The temple site was a hodge-podge of prostitutes, priests, dancers, musicians, and wailing, shouting, and hysterically frenzied worshipers. The Ephesians gained a reputation for being fickle, superstitious, and very immoral.
This temple served also as an important bank in the Mediterranean region. In a time of war, Diana’s temple was especially secure because no one would dare defile her temple. For this reason, it also provided sanctuary for criminals to the city’s detriment. A man was considered immune from prosecution a bowshot from this temple which was about 200 yards. Alexander the Great was so impressed with this temple that he offered the spoils of his eastern campaigns if only his name could be inscribed on it, but his offer was refused. The city remained an important commercial, religious, and political center until it was destroyed by the Goth invasion in 252 A.D.
Paul stayed in Ephesus for three years (Acts 20:31; Acts 19). It became a very strong church spiritually. This letter was written over 40 years later after the church was started.
II. THE AUTHOR or ARCHITECT OF THE LETTER 2:1
In each letter Jesus Christ is described differently. Here He is the One with seven stars in His right hand and walks in the midst of seven golden candlesticks. Ephesus means “desirable.” It was a desirable church. The stars are the angels or the pastors of the churches. Both trains of thought are accepted. Angels are angels all throughout the book. This would mean that each church has an angel assigned to it. That is not bizarre to believe for the Bible teaches that every nation has an angel assigned to it.* Daniel 10:13, 20, 21—But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia. Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come. But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince. Michael is the archangel who helped this angel deliver the answer to Daniel’s prayer.
Some feel the term angel, which means “messenger,” refers to the pastor of the church. We find John addressing an angel as a man in Revelation 19:10.
* Revelation 19:10—And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. The pastor is God’s messenger to the church. He is in the hands of the Lord. Take your pick which view to choose.
