Question for those Users with a long history of Logos

I read a previous thread that a member was going to upgrade his pastors Logos system. I called and did ask the same question for my pastor. They said he had version 1. Are there resources that would not work with that version? I am thinking more about the Concordia Theological Library or maybe the Northwestern Publishing house products. Perhaps Luther's Works?

It's not likely that most of the new resources would work in version 1. The file format has changed several times since then. They do make new versions of the engine backward compatible to be able to read resources that were made for previous versions, but they couldn't have anticipated future file format changes when they made an old version of the engine, so it isn't forward compatible. I'm wondering why you're asking? Are you just wanting to buy your pastor some new resources but have him keep using version 1? Why torture him so? Version 1 was so very very basic. Just a glorified concordance, really, as I recall. Here's the contents of 1.6: http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_1.6__Bible_Software. How about upgrading him to Logos 4. Even the minimal crossgrade would give him tons more functionality than what he's got now (he'd get Biblical People/Places/Things, reverse interlinear capability for the Bible version he has now [KJV], etc.). And then you could buy him one or more of those Lutheran collections you're referring to. He'd get another Bible version (NIV) which also has reverse interlinear capability if you got him the Concordia library (at least Collection 1, or the entire library which includes Collections 1-9).

Rosie, I really want to get him into the 21st century with Bible Software. The upgrade is price prohibitive for me right now. I see your point about the engines and such. I guess I just will have to contemplate this. I sure thought he would have more than what he has. I really need to do something. Its like he is walking in the time of Christ in his computer software. [:)] I guess I just wanted to get some perspective on what he had and what he does not have or if he could get access to it. From your link of 1.6....Wow! Help needed stat.

This sounds like something you should talk about with some others in the church - your small group, Sunday School class, or with church leaders. An investment of less than $1,000 would help your pastor tremendously and that means the church would benefit. If his computer can't handle Logos 4, you could still consider getting at least Scholar's Library for him and install version 3.0. When he can upgrade his computer he'll have 4.0 ready to load.

Some churches try to do something special for a pastor's anniversary at the church, his birthday, Christmas, or in October which is Pastor Appreciation month. All it might take is some suggestions from someone like you to get the ball rolling.

As a pastor, and having several friends who are pastors, one thing I've found is that when some people get comfortable with something, they don't like to change it. Your intention is laudable, but he may not appreciate or want what you would like to give him. I know, I've received many well-intentioned gifts that I've never used, partly because the giver gave what blessed them, but didn't take the time to find out what might bless me. Maybe software is not what he most wants or needs for his ministry. Why don't you sit down with him, or some folks close to him and talk about your desire to bless him with L4. If nothing else, he'll be blessed by your desire to bless him!

BTW, I used Logos 1.6 and enjoyed it immensely. It certainly contains more than the image Rosie posted might suggest, and it was definitely more than a fancy concordance program! In fact, I choose it over other Bible programs precisely because it was more than that. I had a Greek NT, a couple of English Bibles, a Spanish Bible and several other very helpful resources.

If you still really want to bless your pastor with L4, talk with him and show him what you can do with L4 that he can't do with L1. For most people, to make a change means weighing the cost of learning something new, over the time saved by sticking with what you know. He may not want what you'd like to give him. On the other hand, he may find out how blessed he'll be by L4 and decide to take the time to learn to use it.

The minimal crossgrade is only $69.95, though I'm not sure if they'll let you do that from an older version than L3. However I would recommend one of the base packages to make the program more functional.

If cost is an issue, why not go for one of the lower base packages like Leader's Library (only $324.5) and he can always upgrade later if funds become available. Even Leader's Library though would be a tremendous improvement over what he has now. Mark's suggestion of sharing the cost around with others in your church is great. I don't know how small your church is, but presumably you've got at least 10 people. If everyone chips in $20 or $30 you can get this for him pretty easily. Heck, even Christian Home Library at $149.95 would bring him into this century. That's just $15 each split among 10 people. Don't let the title fool you. It's not just for individuals, couples, and families. If your pastor has been functioning with Logos 1 for all this time, he would find the nearly 80 resources in Christian Home Library to be an outstanding benefit.

It sounds like you want to load resources into version 1? If that's the case than I have little hope. OTOH, if you're trying to upgraded his Version 1 library to L3 or L4, that should be possible. Provided he has a license file for Version 1 I would imagine Logos can unlock any of those resources in the newer versions. Did I misunderstand your question?

Thank you for the reality check. I probably should go to him in something like this. I just like surprises so much....and if someone was to surprise me with something I don't have in Logos I would love it.

I called Logos again and clarified that he has Scholars version 1. It sounds like he has about 200 resources in that package. Getting him the updated Scholars would "double" his resources.

Or if you want to keep this under wraps right now, you might speak to someone close to him who might have an idea if he'd appreciate the gift.

I had 1.6 scholars but never used it much. I bit on Series X and I've been upgrading and adding resources ever since. It could be your pastor doesn't know what the new software is like or, as Rich said, prefers to work another way with what he already has.

No, that wouldn't work, unless the pastor contacts Logos and can confirm his license(s) to them so that L4 can unlock those resources. L4 can do this automatically with L3 (which had an option to sync licenses with the Logos servers), L2 and L1 had nothing like that.

Also, there's no guarantee that a system that runs L1.6, would be able to run L4. The experience of running L4 on an underpowered system can be extremely frustrating and have him running back to 1.6 and never looking back.

But if those two issues were dealt with sufficiently, along with the learning curve issue I discussed earlier, he could have a very good experience.

I think that if his copy of L 1.6 was registered Logos support will have no problem helping him get those resources unlocked under L4. He will just need to call. I have many products that were bought under L 1.6 and never had a problem. He may just need to call Logos support.
