How can I search in Words of Christ for where he quotes or makes allusions to Isaiah or Job?

I'm listening to a course on CD on the Biblical Wisdom Literature, and in the introductory lecture when discussing the problem of suffering, the professor mentioned that Jesus quotes or alludes to Isaiah and Job quite a bit. I'm trying to do a search in Logos to find those passages where he might be doing that.

I'm assuming that the cross-references listed in New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge will be adequate for my purposes to show quotes or allusions to Isaiah or Job when they occur. I already have a saved Passage List of WOC from a search I did a while ago in NRSV. That's sufficient for my purposes. Next I did a search in NTSK for <Isa> OR <Job>, and it came up with 52,418 results in 1,253 "articles" which would mean 1,253 Bible verses have cross references to Isaiah or Job. Now my problem is how to intersect these search results with the WOC PL. Because NTSK is not a Bible, I cannot save the search results to a Passage List to intersect with the other one. And I can't restrict my search in NTSK to just that PL. I'm stuck. Any ideas on how I can complete my search?

If you export the NTSK search into a text file, you can then create a new Passage List from that text file and then try the intersection with your WOC Passage List.

Excel could most certainly accomplish this if you know a bit of how to use its formulas.

Try exporting your NTSK search results to a text file

Then open the text file and copy everything

Open a new passage list and select "add from clipboard"

You should have a passage list you can use

Kind of. However what I really want is not a list of the Job and Isaiah verses Jesus quotes or alludes to, but rather the NT verses where Jesus makes these allusions (and ideally also the Job/Isa verses he's potentially referencing there). That is I want the articles in NTSK that have Job or Isa verses in them and that are verse referenced as WOC. It's irritating. NTSK is indexed by Scripture reference, but I can't use a Bible search on it because it isn't a Bible, so I can't limit the results of a search in it to only the Gospels, for example, which would help narrow down my search tremendously.

I can page through the search results in NTSK to the section where the Gospels show up (or export to a Word doc), e.g., as follows, and then manually cross-reference each of these NTSK verses to see if they're within the WOC PL. But I'd like an automated way to do that.

The final results I'm aiming for is a document that would go something like this (I've just manually created this from the above excerpt, cross-referencing with my WOC PL to select only the verses that appear in the latter):

Mt 7:1 - Is 66:5

Mt 8:4 - Is *42:21

Mt 9:2 - Is *40:1, 2. 44:22

Mt 10:6 - Is ✓53:6; Is *58:1

These are not definite quotes/allusions, just possiblities, because the cross-reference might have been from some part of the verse that wasn't in Jesus' words. Then my task after generating this list would be to look up each of those passages and see whether, where, and how Jesus indeed does quote or allude to Job or Isaiah. Bt it's a much less daunting task to do this after automatically narrowing down the list of possible places he might be doing this to just the intersection between NTSK and WOC.

Have you considered using the OT quotes in the NT harmony resources (either the Eusibian canons or the one made for the HCSB?). This isn't fully automated but it would probably be quicker than your TSNK reference because cross references will reflect shared themes as well as quotations and allusions.

I know that the NA27 is tagged with OT quotes so that might be a way to approach this question. Also most version will place a reference in the footnotes when there is an OT quotes, I don't know if a footnote: search could be limited to a QOC Passage List.

Are those fairly exhaustive? Using those I would still have to do quite a bit of manual work to get the kind of list I'm looking for. Looking through the first one under Job I found only these that are WOC:

Interesting, but I'm not sure any of those are what the professor was getting at when he said Jesus quoted or alluded to Job on the topic of suffering. It would be even more work to manually go through the Isaiah passages since there are tons of quotes and allusions to Isaiah in the NT.

Maybe I'll just have to give up and write to this professor and ask him what verses he had in mind. Or maybe he'll get to it in a later lecture.
