why is it that what was once a method of excluding references no longer appears to be effective has something changed or am I recalling amiss?

While I am familiar with that outside of Faithlife products, I never used it in Logos/Verbum - either because it wasn't valid or because I didn't know about it.  I do remember users begging for a NOT.

I think this is a valuable feature and if it has been abandoned for some unstated reason either an alternative or a readoption of this feature should receive immediate attention. I'm fairly certain this has been available in the past. I can't in any way justify the elimination of this valuable feature.

I've used - before and wasn't aware it was gone. Maybe they dropped it because it was undocumented and/or harder to maintain than its synonym ANDNOT?

See my response above, where the issue was compounded by incorrect use of comma (OR) and lack of parentheses in a complex expression.

A simple expression like subject:greek -type:grammar will demonstrates its effectiveness.

MJ like you I'm in the dark as to Doc's ultimate goal, but I was able to produce a manageable collection with this rule:

    type:monograph, subject:greek ANDNOT author:emil, title:hebrew -type:grammar, -type:course

However, I have a question; why is it that what was once a method of excluding references no longer appears to be effective has something changed or am I recalling amiss? And, to be clear I'm referring to placing a ( - ) sign before your value of reference. It doesn't work in the library either.

    1. It needs parentheses to clarify your intention either side of the ANDNOT
    2. type:monograph, subject:greek should be type:monograph OR subject:greek
      1. you can't mix comma , with other operators
    3. author:emil, title:hebrew  should be  author:emil OR title:hebrew for the same reason.
    4. -type:grammar, -type:course  should be -type:grammar -type:course
      1. the comma (OR)  conflicts with wanting to exclude both types i.e. it reads exclude type:grammar OR exclude type:course rather than exclude type:grammar AND exclude type:course.

So then, this rule should be: (type:monograph OR subject:greek) ANDNOT  (author:emil OR title:hebrew) -type:grammar -type:course

And the - retains its ability to exclude terms.

    Thanks for the clarification.

And the - retains its ability to exclude terms.

    This is good news!

Just combine the two type rules with OR  ---> I already included the necessary (..)

    Still struggling with this.

Oddly enough, Dave, my original rule gave me 10 (good) results, and this rule (your combined type rules) only gives me 5.

    ???

Here's part of that problem...I've dealt with it before but I've forgotten the cause and the fix. The same rule in the Collection tool is not generating identical results in the Library. Is this caused by downloaded resources vs cloud resources? What am I missing?

Yes. Unfortunately when Faithlife implemented the Cloud resource feature they decided not to make cloud resources work with your collections.

    Ouch, FL.

Hard to reason why the can make a print book that I don't even have digitally show up in search results but the can't (or won't) make my licensed resources show up in a collection unless I've downloaded them.

I suspect it has to do with the split in the search results between downloaded and cloud. An additional step would be needed to divide the results (or merge the results) everywhere a search is done against a collection. Doable but a very large project if you consider all the guide sections affected.

Something got lost along the way, so could you restate your original rule and my combined type rule  (not in a screenshot).

Then tell me the results in your Library for each rule.

I think the difference had to do with cloud vs downloaded...but not sure.

    My original rule was

              type:monograph AND subject:greek ANDNOT author:emil OR type:grammar ANDNOT title:hebrew OR type:courseware

The combined rule I got from your post looks like

              (type:(courseware, study-guide, workbook, encyclopedia, handbook) AND subject:bible.n.t.) OR (type:(grammar,monograph,glossary) AND subject:greek-language)

Using my rule, I'm getting 53 in the Collections tool and 54 in the Library.

Using your rule, I'm getting 40 in the Collections tool and 40 in the Library.

I copied the results into an Excel file for easier comparision, and attached it to this post.

    My last was a correction of Beloved Amodeo's  i.e. (type:monograph OR subject:greek) ANDNOT  (author:emil OR title:hebrew) -type:grammar -type:course

So it will give more results than yours. But the structure of yours without parentheses is ambiguous:

    type:monograph AND subject:greek ANDNOT (author:emil OR type:grammar) ANDNOT (title:hebrew OR type:courseware)

will exclude type:Courseware and type:Grammar. Is that what you intended?
