L/V 10+ Tip of the Day #141 Factbook filter
Another tip of the day (TOTD) series for Logos/Verbum 10. They will be short and often drawn from forum posts. Feel free to ask questions and/or suggest forum posts you'd like to see included. Adding comments about the behavior on mobile and web apps would be appreciated by your fellow forumites. A search for "L/V 10+ Tip of the Day site:community.logos.com" on Google should bring the tips up as should this Reading List within the application.
This tip is inspired by the forum post: Psalm 23 Sheperd not included in ESV search - Logos Forums
When using the data from Factbook for all mentions of "shepherd" (or any other person, place, or thing) instead of running a search, one needs to be aware of what you are asking for.
Using the OP's example of "A shepherd" for Factbook:
- Under Greek there are only two Greek lemmas for "shepherd" with a total of 18 occurrences. Clicking on "Open 18 passages in NRSV" will create a temporary filter that shows just those 18 occurrences.
- Under Hebrew there are again only two Hebrew lemmas for "shepherd" both of which occur only once. Clicking on "Open 2 passages in NRSV" will create a temporary filter that shows just those 2 occurrences.
- All other occurrences of "shepherd" in an English Bible will appear under translated as because the original language lemma does not have a gloss of "shepherd". These are numerous enough that there is a more function to show the remainder of the entries.
- Here "Open 86 passages in NRSV" creates a temporary filter showing just those 86 passages. There is no function to show Greek lemmas + Hebrew lemmas + translated as = all occurrences of person:"A Shepherd"
- Why doesn't shepherd in Psalm 23 appear in the Hebrew lemma list? Because the word is a verb and the noun in translation comes from the implied subject of a verb. Illustration shows the save as Passage List option rather than Factbook itself on the left.
An example of the Factbook filters applied to the NRSV i.e., the same information as given in Factbook:
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."
