Why is the Mac Version so Slow? 8/25/10

Very frustrating waiting for the program to launch or refresh. I'm running a duo-core 2.4 with 4 gig ram, and the "wheels" turn for a very long time in this new mac version. Right now it is much faster to run parallels, plus WinXP, and run the Windows version. The Win version makes use of all my library too, and the Mac version won't recognize my 3.0 disks to add them to the library. Very Kludge at this point in the game. I'm sure it will be better later, but if you're depending on this as primary preparation software stick with the Windows version of Logos. or BibleWorks, or one of the other programs.

Could you describe what it is you are doing within the program when it begins to run sluggishly? Preferably this description would include step by step what it is you are doing, so if you are using the Go bar on the Home Page for a verse or piece of bible text then knowing exactly what citation it is you are using would be very helpful. Logs would also be helpful in diagnosing any potential problems that may be occurring. If you look at my signature at the bottom there is a link to a thread that talks about how to pull logs. I'm having the same sluggishness problem on my mac. Every click is plagued with late response. Frankly its getting annoying. On top of all that, it froze up 3 times on me today. I had to force quit all three times. Are these problems going to be fixed with the new release?

Lots of users find the performance acceptable, so most likely it's a specific configuration or problem with your installation. If you wouldn't mind posting your logs, we would love to help you. Logs give us concrete information for helping you figure out exactly what the problem is and how to get past it. See my signature for a link to a video tutorial on how to post logs.

Overall I am very pleased and excited to see how L4 Mac has progressed. Thank you developers for all your efforts. Thanks also to all who post to these forums. I am a long time lurker, first time posting, and I have learned so much from reading these forums.

I'm also experiencing a general sluggishness overall, with frequent spinning beach balls for simple tasks like scrolling text. Also I frequently have to do a force quit to shutdown the program. I'm pretty sure these issues (for me at least) are somehow connected with syncing as the problems do not occur when I work in offline mode. Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated. I have attached my logs.

I too am having speed issues on L4 for Mac... Would love some help. I went to: How to report Logos 4 Mac bugs, but that unfortunately links to youtube - which my internet filter blocks.... I understand you need a log, but I cannot for the life of me see anywhere to turn on logging in L4 for Mac... So, if I could simply turn on logging, I believe I could handle the rest - restart, u/l'ing the log, etc....

Tommy, Where is your signature? Where is the link that tells my how to download and send in my log files? There is a link at the top with your forum id and information, there is an icon for logos, but there is no "signature" at the bottom with a hyperlink..... At least not the way my forum view is appearing.

Unfortunately, it's back to the Windows version (bleck!) until the guide scrolling issue is resolved. It's just too slow to use it as is right now. But otherwise the beta 8 seems to be almost there. Great work Mac team!

If you aren't seeing any signatures from forum posts, it's possible that you have it disabled via your "Edit -> Site Options -> Display user signatures" preference.

Make sure that is switched to "Yes" and save those options and signatures should display correctly again.

Yes, I have a similar configuration and have been experiencing such slow performance that I have gone back to using the initial 1.2 Mac Logos. I'm using the latest beta. I seriously began looking for alternatives to Logos (which I don't want to do--I have been using Logos from the very beginning) because it is unusable like this. Lots of spinning balls, and long times for search results to appear (10-20 seconds +), even though it says the search has been completed in under a second. All menus seem to be very slow. Am really not sure how Mac Logos can be ready to ship in this condition???!

Would be grateful if anyone has any illumination on this!

While your experience is clearly not unique, it is also not universal. A similar number of people log on to tell us how much more improved (faster, even) each beta is.

Unfortunately, most complaints of slowness are not accompanied by much, if anything, in the way of information that would help us to diagnose the issue(s). Interesting and helpful pieces of information when mentioning performance problems:

your system specs as reported by the "About This Mac" dialog (under the Apple menu in your menu bar)
logs captured as close to the slowness as possible.
For those who are comfortable, a screen capture of Activity Monitory showing "System Memory" in the bottom pane and sorted by Real Memory or CPU on the top.

This will usually give us a good idea of what panels you have open and what may be going on in the background.

I have found that if I have the "Use Internet" preference on, the program returns continuous spinning beach balls, jerky motion, and delays (similar to what people are reporting). However, when I turn the preference off, most of these problems go away. I especially noticed this when switching between other applications (e.g. MS Word) and Logos 4. It appeared (again with Internet on), Logos wanted to synchronize when receiving focus from another applications and also seemed to want to continually synchronize as I navigated through Logos. I hope this helps.

Dave, that's cool - I tried it and am still seeing beach balls and lagging scrolling.... Hmmmm....

Similar to others I am seeing slower performance on B9 and B10.

The startup time takes about twenty seconds.

A passage search looks like it has not worked then ten seconds later it starts to come up but many of the resources have spinners running for about twenty more seconds.

I am on a MBP 2.4 Dual Core 2 with 4Gb mem

I am having the same issues. The program opens fine, but as soon as I try to do anything (i.e. right-click a word, resize a panel, resize a window, scroll, open a book, etc... I get a beach ball and have to wait and wait. I have looked at my Activity Monitor and it registers Logos4 taking well over 100% of my CPU (at times it reaches 174%). I even upgraded to 8GB of RAM in hopes that would help, but it hasn't changed performance at all. Much faster to run in Parallels. I am attaching my log files for help.

Unfortunately Beta 11 hasn't fixed it for me. Logos for Mac chews all my CPU and takes around 3-5 minutes to load a passage that I search for. It's basically un-usable but I love the software from a features point of view so I'm hanging out to get the performance that most people seem to have from Beta 11!

I've done a full index rebuild but it seemed to just make it worse. Could I have a corrupt index or something?

My Specs:

Mac Book pro
3.06Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB 1067 Mhz DDR3

- Launching Logos: ~40 secs, of which 20 secs is watching the sinning rainbow flag before anything appears inside the Logos window

- Scrolling the bible text is always painfully slow

- It's slow with "Use internet" on and off

- When searching for a passage (eg. "Judges" in the search bar) it will take about 20 seconds to do anything and the spinning wheels in the Passage Guide will take about 3-5 minutes to all finish spinning.

If you can post up your logs in a new thread I bet the devs will take a look at them and see what is going on. They looked at mine a few releases back and pointed out some resource tidying I could do. This took my install from unusable (on a very stout Mac Pro) to smooth like butter. There are instructions on log posting at the top of this forum.

Thanks Robert, I'll do that now.

Good to hear that it should be solvable. Hopefully they code it to handle that automatically for users in the future, as Mac users in general won't put up with PC-like performance ;-)
