NICNT Luke on pre-pub! Looks like Logos is beginning to split up this excellent commentary series!

I just noticed today that the Luke volume from the New International Commentary on the New Testament (NICNT) is on pre-pub for $19.95. This is excellent news. It looks like Logos is beginning to split up this often requested commentary series into individual volumes.

Keep an eye on the prepubs page in the coming days/weeks. I expect we might be seeing more volumes coming through from both NICNT and NICOT, but that's just a guess.

Right, Joel Green is the Author of the 1997 NICNT:Luke which was in the bundle. This one is 1971 / Norval Geldenhuys.

Back when the NICOT/NT was first coming out in Logos format, a lot of people asked about the older, discontinued volumes but I don't think we ever had a commitment to publish them. I am pleased to see that Logos/Eerdmans have followed up on those requests and are now beginning to make them available. Murray, Ridderbos, Hughes, Bruce, Morris (and all of the rest) were are just too good to ignore. Thanks.

A curious pre-pub. Cheap enough, but here's what D.A. Carson says:

"From the preacher’s point of view, J. Norval Geldenhuys (the inaugural volume in NIC; 1971 [orig. 1951], /$27.99—replaced by Joel Green, above) has now so far been eclipsed that it is not even worth skimming."

But I checked it and could swear that I saw Joel Green as the author on this pre-pub description page and then checked my own library and saw that was the same author's name, which is why I came to the conclusion I came to and posted as I did. DId someone pull a fast one on me and fix a misprint on the pre-pub description page just since I posted that? [:S]

Anyway, I've now put in an order for this.

This volume dates from 1971. I had already been in Bible College for 3 years when it came out. A older, fellow pastor gave it to me as a graduation gift in 1973. It was my introduction to "NIC" commentaries and I am still grateful.
I will purchase this for sentimental reasons.

No...I don't think so. I proofed the page for the poster. It had the right author when I read it. Perhaps its the new style cover that did it...

Yes, I thought also it has to be some new volume on Luke, although I haven't been aware of any new coming on Luke in this series. Only than I checked the author... I ordered it anyway. Is it worth of having it next to the Green's one in the NICNT collection?

EDIT: I also have the BECNT Bock's Luke. I use this one the most. It is the best IMHO.

This particular one (along with Murray on Romans) did receive a makeover cover in red like the one you seen on the pre-pub page. They were only reprinted for a very short time, but they do exist in this cover style.

The NICNT went through at least four iterations of covers (that I know of):

Tan dust jacket with black (brown?) writing
Yellow with green writing
Yellow with bright pink/magenta
The current red dust jacket.

And then there was the dusk jacket for the volumes originally published as the "New London Commentary Series" which morphed into the NIC.

If I remember correctly, all four of these covers can be seen at Moody Bible Institute's Crowell Library, which I had the pleasure of shelving for four years back while I was there...which seems like so long ago now...

I bought a second hand copy of a 1975 reprint of this a year or two ago on e-bay. I was looking at Luke at the time and found this volume kept getting referenced in others I was reading. Nice to now be able to get this in Logos. Hopefully the others will come. Below is the front cover an inner flap dust jacket in case anyone wants to read the blurbs from the time.Back Cover an back flap mainly talk about the set so I've just included the snippet for the back inner flap which includes a bit more info on the author than the pre-pub page offers.

I just wonder how he has time to read all of the commentaries he's surveyed to give his opinion about them. I recently got Lange's Commentary on the Holy Scriptures and he's got it listed in the section Older Commentaries, but says nothing positive or negative about them. In some instances he sort of contradicts himself (IMO).

For example: In one section "1.2.2 Series worth noting but not pursuing" he says the College Press NIV commentaries are "usually aimed at the lay student or poorly trained pastor, but they are not robust enough to be the primary support for well-trained students and preachers" - yet in a later section titled "1.2.3 More substantial series" he says of the College Press NIV commentaries the following: "The College Press NIV Commentary has a slightly misleading name, since College Press is a product of the Restorationist movement. This series is an attempt to break into a slightly more scholarly market. Most of the contributions that have appeared so far are decidedly on the light side, but some of the volumes are stronger." So is it not worth pursuing or is it more substantial that people should get it?

I have the complete OT and NT College Press NIV commentaries and I can honestly say that the NT is stronger than the OT. I'm kind of disappointed on the OT volumes (e.g. Psalms, Isaiah, Proverbs and others), though there are some that are nicely done (e.g. Leviticus, Exodus, Genesis and others). Anyway, I wonder if Carson has really gone completely gone through all of the commentaries. It'd be amazing if he did considering all the writing he does and all other responsibilities that he might have. Over all, I won't be harsh on him, I really like several of his books and commentaries. I borrowed a book from a friend that Carson wrote and he kind of lost me a little bit "Exegetical Fallacies" but I might get it in the future.

I've got both, and I prefer Green's work. It's much more in-depth IMO.
