Will the AI-O-Meter be coming to the Desktop App

I noticed in the web app that there is an AI credits usage icon next to the store icon.

Will this be coming to the desktop app at some point (with the ability to hide it in settings of course)?

I would like to highlight this comment, as it is important to me.

There is a pattern that is often followed where features are tested in the Web app before entering desktop beta.

Yes, the ability to hide it is crucial. I want to be able to see it before I get to 80% or 100%, but I won't want to see it "all the time."

This has made my day.  I can't stop looking at it all the time.

They should put Kiyah in charge of feature nomenclature. I absolutely love "AI-O-Meter". 😁

    Nice!

Maybe I'm a bit short sighted, but here it doesn't say if credits not used at the end of a month are transferred and added to the next month (does it)?

It has been clearly communicated (somewhere) that leftover credits do not transfer to the next month. It's a clean reset every month. However, the intention is that users have more than enough credits every month. So if a user is consistently running out of credits, that may indicate that something might need to be adjusted in their workflow to better manage AI credits.

Just confirming, yes, this will be in desktop 38.0, which will release to beta on Nov 5 and to stable Dec 3.

We won't have a setting to hide it in v38. Most people seem to think that more information is better -- but then, after we show it all the time, we might hear from more people like you who find it distracting. Later, we might add a setting to turn it on or off, or change what % you see it at, or (I like your idea, Kiyah) always show it in the About panel.

Pleasing everyone is hard! Thanks for your patience while we dial this in.

It has been clearly communicated (somewhere) that leftover credits do not transfer to the next month. It's a clean reset every month.

It does say in that same article:
    > These are all drawn from the same fixed pool of credits, which is renewed each month and does not roll over.

    (emphasis added)

However, the intention is that users have more than enough credits every month. So if a user is consistently running out of credits, that may indicate that something might need to be adjusted in their workflow to better manage AI credits.

So far, the biggest areas of credit spend have been for the Auto-Translation tool and Smart Search Synopsis
That makes sense, since passively leaving those tools open will continue to use AI credits as you keep using the panel.

    • If you have the Translate sidebar open in a resource, it will continue to generate new translations as you scroll through the book.
    • If you have the Synopsis card open in a Smart Search, it will generate a new synopsis for every new search.

So if you find you are using AI credits too quickly, just X out of those tools, and they will stay closed. They are only a click away when you want them back.

Always showing it in the About panel was not my idea but it's a good one. My suggestion would be to both add a show/hide setting for the toolbar in Settings AND have it always show it the About page. The former would allow users to see their on-going usage if they using heavy AI features (translation, synopsis) and hide it when they're not. The About page would be a quick way for anyone to check where they are but not have to see it on the toolbar.

I feel like if you implement it that way you'll please the most number of people and use cases. People who want to see it on the toolbar all the time can do that. People who want to see it on the toolbar sometimes can turn it on and off. People who want to see it never can leave it off. People who just want to spot-check their usage can go to About page.

I really do think they should name it the AI-O-Meter in Settings:

    Show AI-O-Meter on Toolbar: Yes/No

Then we'd get to type 'Set Show AI-O-Meter on Toolbar to Yes' in the command box.

Put a suggestion up for it.  I'm voting for that

It is disappointing to know that desktop stable version 38.0 will not have an option in program settings to hide this distracting AI credit usage icon. Logos, please add this option.

I have no need to see my AI credit usage on the application toolbar. This icon will not only be a visual distraction; it will also reduce available space in the shortcut bar. I believe this is especially true for those of us who use the toolbar in the “top” location. For these reasons, I also keep the store button hidden and would keep the “help center” icon hidden if I could, since it is easily accessible through the dashboard.

Kiyah: When you mention the “About page”, are you referring to the “About Logos” window listed in the drop down menu under the three dot icon (program menu) on the toolbar? If yes, then I fully agree with your suggestion. That would be a hidden but easily accessible location to check AI credit usage and the combination of that along with a show/hide option in program settings for the toolbar icon would satisfy any user preference.

Again, I'm on the reverse side on this issue. I would not like to see the AI meter separated from the other status features all of which are on the application toolbar. Keep like with like is a basic rule of user interfaces. Second, I suspect that it is intrusive only because it is not familiar. Give it a couple of months and see if it is still intrusive or if you have become acclimatized to it.

I can’t stop looking at it either, but I love it. If only it were bigger. I am tracking my usage now to see what I can really get out of it.

@Willie yes I was referring to the About Logos window.

Preferences are always an interesting part of software. There are things I would like Logos to do that I know are niche. The challenge with software is how much do you make all of this configurable. We debated this years ago with Bob and he was advocating for the philosophy to keep the software as simple as possible. Makes a lot of sense, but I have still occasionally advocated for more options to format text in resource windows. Others have made cases for other things. (e.g. make an option to turn off the new dynamic resource toolbar)

I like the meter. It's helpful for my use case to understand how many credits I have and how much time I have left in the month before they are renewed. I imagine those who don't come anywhere close to using their credits would find it in the way and just prefer a notification when they are getting low.

Thanks for confirming this Kiyah. I noticed the following Feedback suggestion submitted by a Logos employee. It appears she read your suggestion. I voted for it.
