This is similar to another suggestion I just made, but this would probably be easier to implement and would still accomplish mostly the same thing.
When you add a foreground image, you can chose image > "browse media" / or "import". The idea would be to add an option in this menu, to use whatever image was chosen for that slide's background in the main display.
This should be made to work properly with smart media, so the image on a live stream always corresponds with the background on the main projectors.
