This reference book is immensely helpful and accessible. It's complete with biographies, events (like Christianity in the roman world), locations, various Hellenic deities & mythological figures, famous historical figures, descriptions of classical works, descriptions of societal concepts (e.g. city states, slavery), contemporary philosophies & etc.

Here's a small excerpt from page 89.
"Atima:
The loss of some or all civic rights by a citizen of a Greek city in punishment for certain offences concerning the state. The loss of rights might be temporary or permanent."

Another from page 429.
"Pella:
Capital of Macedon c.400-167 BC (i.e from the time of King Archelaus until the conquest by Rome), on the river Lydias, which is navigable from Pella to the sea. It became the largest Macedonian city until overtaken by Thessalonika in 146 BC. Pella was later a Roman colony. The ancient city has been extensively excavated.
