Katharine R. O'Reilly, Caterina Pellò, Ancient women philosophers: recovered ideas and new perspectives. New York: Cambridge University Press, 2023.

Ancient Women Philosophers: Recovered Ideas and New Perspectives is a fascinating new addition to the scholarship on women philosophers in antiquity, as well as the reintroduction of voices that had been missing or suppressed for centuries in the philosophical canon. The book focuses on a vital age in philosophy that was highly creative in terms of new ideas and advancements, and to some extent, open to female thinkers (for example, Epicureans and Stoics). Unfortunately, as the editors, O'Reilly and Pellò, explain in the Introduction, very little direct evidence and texts have remained. The goal of this book is to find the evidence that does exist, to compile and preserve the scarce information regarding women's intellectual activity, and to highlight the philosophical contributions made by ancient women from various traditions, particularly Greek and Roman.
