Interesting image -- p 4, Home Page
Today, 10/08/2009 there is an interesting illustration on p 4 of the Home Page. I suggest everyone take a look at it. If I am not greatly mistaken there is an image of a PIG carved on the surface of the top right figure !

I don't believe everyone's home page is the same since it depends on settings.
I don't believe everyone's p4 is the same as your p4 since I have 7 pages on my desktop and more than that on my laptop.
Sadly no pigs here, or no pictures on p4 either.

You're probably correct. I had forgotten that I basically told them to send me everything. the image is titles "Altar of Burned Offering" and can be found in the resource 1000 Bible Images. Take a look and tell me if you also think it looks like a pig.

It very well may be a pig.

I think it's a hyena.
I don't think there are any hyena's outside of the African continent. These altars purport to be Semitic, indicating the region (at least) of Palestine.
Besides, what would a hyena be doing wearing a sweater?

And it looks like it's wearing a sweater.
Perhaps it was carved when Jimmy Carter was in the White House. [6]

Are you trying to suggest its a picture of George at birth?
I don't know why messing with George is so much fun.

ah Ha:
"In Palestine the striped hyena is a common predator, preferring rocky territory and even rock tombs. It may exhume human bodies."

But I am more concerned with why George is so concerned.
I'm not particularly concerned, but either it isn't Israelite or it seems very strange that they would portray a pig on an altar of holocost. [Check on the regulations regarding Kashrut]

I suspected that was the reason. There are several ANE altars for various cultures in the 1000 Bible Images. And the caption says "there also were small, cubic altars of incense all over the Near East. They were normally 10 by 10 by 10 cm and were used in private homes." I think this is one of those---for some pagan deity.

Well, now that I've learned something new for the day, I can take the rest of the day off.
But the stripe is odd, since striped hyenas have multiple stripes, evenly distributed from front to back. The pictures of striped hyenas I found (on the internet) also gave them a longer tail, but that could merely be an argument for non-realistic art.
Whatever it is, it's strange.

Not sure about the animal in question, but the altar beneath it is in South Arabian, and reads QST. Syriac and Ethiopic both use QSS for 'priest' so it is probably related to that (sorry I don't have the comparative Semitics chops to do better than that). But in any event, the beastie on the altar above may well not come from Palestine, since the South Arabian altar is from farther afield (note the similar shapes of the two altars in question compared to the horned altar on the left).

The tail doesn't look like a pigs tail, so I'll go with the hyena theory
DDD p732 discusses Isaiah 13:21-22 in connection with certain demons worshipped in the palestinian area which lived in areas inhabited by (among other things) hyena's.
Perhaps the Hyena is carved on the altar in some connection with the cult which worshipped those "hairy demons"?
Of course that's wildly speculative, but no more so than anything else that can be said.

I was going to say that until I Libronixed the DDD.
