Unprintable character in TOC of Hastings' Encyclopædia of Religion and Ethics

In "Encyclopædia of Religion and Ethics, Volumes I-XIII" (https://www.logos.com/product/8495/encyclopaedia-of-religion-and-ethics), edited by James Hastings, there is an unprintable character that appears in the Table of Contents, where it is rendered correctly (I assume) as MA̔ARRĪ in the text of the book.
