Problem Description:
A user has a bible and a commentary open in split view layout and studies a passage. The mobile Logos App has various tools to find additional information about the text. From time to time, he wants to:
Search for selected words or phrases
Opens the Factbook with the context of a selected word
Use an Assistant to do open a Word Study, the Exegetical Tool, …
Each of the actions opens a new instance (window) of that tool. This is done with a nice animation that shows the user that Logos has opened a new window. The cluttering of the user interface starts here: Every search opens a new window, every usage of an assistant too. Even more annoying is the fact is that the new tool has no context. If the user selects a word in the bible and wants to read more information in the factbook he must open it and write or copy the word to the search field.
Suggestion 1: Target tool windows
In the Layout view the user could already set connect windows in a way that they follow each other by activating a letter with a link symbol. In a similar way it should be possible for the user to set a tool window to be the target for any further use of the tool.
Example: The user adds a new split view window/tile and opens the Word Study tool within it. Now he marks this window to be the target for all further word study searches. This could be done by tapping and highlighting a small icon (target, crosshair) on the window in the layout view.
Any word study search will now switch the focus to the same Word Study window/tile and show the new results within it. The same could be done for: Search Result Windows, the Factbook, and any other context sensitive tool.
Suggestion 2: Context sensitive action buttons
When the user selects a word in the bible the context window is opened. Here the user could do a search or a word study the number of available action buttons should be user configurable. This would allow to add buttons to open the Factbook and other context sensitive tools.
The workflow to perform a Factbook research then could be done in two easy steps:
Select the word of interest in the bible
Select the Factbook Action button in the Context Menu
Now the view changes to the target Factbook window and shows the result of the selected word.
If a configurable button list is to much work. Some additional Tool Buttons in a second row will do the same job.
Suggestion 3: The “home view”
Like Suggestion 1 add a way to mark one single window as the “Home view” (Icon: House). Every other window could then show a “back to Home” Icon in the Topline. By tapping on this icon the current view switches back to the “Home view” Window. In combination with Suggestion 1 this allows the user to do quick research on a topic with one of the Logos Tools and then easily return to the Bible context he started the research.
