Missing note anchors in desktop app

Many of my note anchors are no longer showing up in the desktop app. This seems to only be happening in my notes tagged to BDAG. The anchor just shows "BDAG" rather than the reference. The anchors are all there when I use the web app.

How can I restore the anchors in the desktop app? I have tried multiple versions and a clean install of the desktop app.

For the last 2.5 months, I've been trying various Logos versions from 30.1 - 40.1 trying to determine which versions have properly working note anchors in BDAG and run with the least amount of lag. With versions 34.0 and newer, an "update" to BDAG gets downloaded which resolves the note anchor problem. As much as I would like to run version 33.0 or 33.2, something prevents that essential BDAG update from installing on those versions. I'm currently running 34.1.9. It seems to run relatively quickly for a day or so before beginning to slow down.

In general, a reinstallation doesn’t help in situations like this

Yes. All books are downloaded.

I see the full anchor info on new notes, also. The problem is with notes I've created in the past 6 months or so. I can't see the exact timeframe because I don't see any date stamps on the notes.

I just updated to 38.1.2 to see if that would fix the problem. When I did that, it pushed an update to BDAG. All my note anchors are working now. So the problem is tied to some kind of update with BDAG. Four other books (out of 3,817) also got updated.

I need to figure out how to keep all my books updated without running the latest Logos version. I don't want the AI features running on my computer. Maybe I need to start a new thread asking how to keep my library updated.

Have you subscribed to one of the subscription tiers?

If not, you won't have any AI features running and you will get updates to the core (non-AI) engine and book updates.

I have not and will not be subscribing. There's no way to remove the AI features from the core program. It has been baked into the cake at least as far back as version 32. I prefer to use a version without AI and will downgrade to an older version when I can figure out how to keep my library updated.

I don't understand what you mean.

I'm not suggesting that there are different versions of software shipped - one with AI-enabling code and one without - but if you don't have a subscription the AI features won't be enabled. Are you able to outline your specific concerns?

If you did install an earlier version and then use the comment set update channel to dontupdate then you wouldn't get software updates but you would get updates to resources in your library.

(The update channel setting is used to determine what software updates are deployed with the main functional values being stable, default and beta. If you set it to a value that isn't recognised - such as dontupdate - then updates are not downloaded)

@Graham Criddle, I don't know how to quote only part of your response. You described the way things are supposed to work. I should be able to set my update channel to manual and still receive all library updates. But I have 5 books that don't update properly in that scenario. One of those books is BDAG. That is why I had the problem with note anchors. As soon as I figure out how to resolve that issue, I will probably go back to 28.1.42. That version seems to run well.

One thing to take into account is that some book updates / new books require the latest version of the software to run properly. I don't know if that is relevant to the issue you had with BDAG.

Stating the obvious, that's quite an old version (September 2023). Please be aware that this would be unsupported and, at some point, would probably not support new books that you might want to purchase (or indeed updates to current ones)

Why would the software version prevent books from updating or prevent me from purchasing new books? I thought my library was independent of the software. I realize any new features and datasets would not work on older software that doesn't support it, but I would hope I wouldn't lose access to books.

BTW, I'm installing 36.1.6 right now. All of my note anchors seem to be working properly. I did not do a clean install. Not sure if that impacted the BDAG update or not. Usually, BDAG is one of the last books to show up in my library but this time, it came up very quickly and before many of my other books.

There have been occasions in the past - not very frequently - where new books where shipped with a new datatype which required updated software to access them. It is that sort of thing I am thinking about - so not a high frequency issue but a possibility.

And there is no issue in losing access to books you own. That wouldn't happen so long as your software continues to work.

The app (or core program) does not run the AI. It is run on AI servers for which Logos pays via subscriptions. If you don't subscribe the AI interfaces are hidden/not available.

If you run the current version (still free) you can have technical support for any "slow down" issues, otherwise I fear you are chasing your tail with installing/uninstalling older versions.
