Reading references ruins the experience of text-to-speech

While exercising today, I tried using the text-to-speech function for the first time by listening to a commentary on an Android device. It was an unpleasant experience.
As in many academic works, the author littered the text with in-line references like "Jewett (1971:198–212) and Martyn (1983:221–35)" which the TTS read verbatim completely destroying the author's flow of thought and my experience of the book.
Is there an option to turn off the reading of these references (and footnote markers)?
If not, please consider adding it. Thanks.
Have a great day,
jmac

This request is long overdue! I also find those references (including biblical citations) very annoying when using TTS/Read-Aloud. Please provide an option to skip those, thanks!

My favorite is when the text-to-speech thinks the numbers in the inline references are a time.

The TTS definitely has some trouble with these examples.
