Copying references and footnotes to a Word document

Does anyone find that the way that Logos copies references and footnotes for use in a Word document to be poorly implemented?

I can't seem to get the Logos support team to understand the need to have verse references in the footnotes and to remove the redundant entries. Any suggestions of either how to fix this with current settings or how to get Logos to treat this as a software deficiency and get it fixed?

Logos has no knowledge of what footnotes you have in your Word document as not all footnotes in Word had to come through Logos. So the request for

Is a word issue not a Logos issue. as for

I'm not sure what you want that it doesn't already do. are you using a style that uses inline identification rather than a footnote?

Secondly, when it comes to footnotes and the such, this is not one of the strong points for Logos. They just recently added Turabian 9th Ed. - Full note. And it still doesn't always get put in entirely correctly. As @MJ. Smith said above, this is more of a Word issue, but even with that, taking out redundants and putting in an "Ibid." entries is more of a manual thing. I use Zotero when writing for all of my footnotes and bibliographies, and while it shortens the footnotes for those that are repeated, I have to still manually put in the "Ibid." entries.

Unless Logos makes notes or sermon editor into a full-blown word processor, I don't see Logos doing much more with footnotes and citations.

Logos reproduced this behavior, which makes their attitude toward resolving this puzzling. All their recommendations for making things better by toggling different footnote settings all produced exactly the same results, which makes me think there's a bug. It's definitely not a Word issue. Engineering resources are probably assigned to more important issues, I reckon.

I agree that footnotes aren't strong points for Logos. But since the program does allow the ability to copy the verse references and put them in the footnotes, it seems to me that they could make them more useful by adding the verse reference at the beginning of each footnote, and it makes sense to remove the verse citation redundancies.

Thanks for responding. I'm settled on the sad fact that I'll just have to live with it the way it is and manually make changes in my Word document if I want it to be right.

If you copy something from Logos and paste it into Word, it will add a footnote in your selected format. If you copy and paste another thing from the same resource, it is not going to know what you did in Word previously. MS Word and Logos are not connected.

Secondly, based on the screenshot you provided, copying and pasting the NASB 95 1 Peter 1 is going to have duplicate/redundant entries because the resource you are copying from has it duplicated. If you notice in the resource itself, "throughout [d]Pontus, [e]Galatia, [d]Cappadocia, [d]Asia, and [f]Bithynia, [g]who are chosen," the "d" is repeated. If you are wanting only 1 entry for "d," I think the resource you are copying from itself is the problem, not Logos.

Lastly, if you want the "references," which I am assuming is the [d], [e], and what not (not sure if you know this already or not). You can select the text you want, right-click or two-finger click, in the menu under copy select "more," this will open a "Copy Bible Verses" tab. Then select the "fully formatted with footnotes" option along with your preferred translation. But again, since NASB 95 has duplicated references, it is going to paste duplicated references. This is where you have to do the manual work in Word. However, I'm thankful I don't have to type all of that, it is easy to delete what I don't want or edit the duplicates to be "Ibid."

The main point of what I said is that Logos is going to paste resource-specific references, and if the resource has duplicated references, it is going to paste those duplicate references because the resource (in this case NASB) as them duplicated. Logos and Word are not connected, therefore you have to do the manual labor to make it look like what you want, which is a lot better than typing it all up manually.

Okay…first…thank you M.J. Smith and Jonathan Bradley. You were both right about my problem with footnotes being a Word issue. I'd have to delete the referent in the verse to get rid of the redundancy in the footnotes. So, thank you!

And, thank you Christopher Randall. I didn't know about the Copy Verses formatting menu available through the right-click menu. I see if I want to put the time in and learn the Logos formatting language I might be able to fix my problem myself. Maybe! At least it's a path to follow. Thanks!

Honestly, I didn’t either. I just saw the different options and played with it for about 5 minutes. Seems useful because it looked like, haven’t verified, it could add multiple verses at one time.
