What is the empty square for?

I probably have missed something, but in the Forum layout, what is the empty square for? (three examples on the left of the screenshot)

I don't dare to test it, because I am afraid that something will detonate or I'll get into something I cannot get rid of …

    I didn't get one of those in the mail. I tried all the 'views' … zippo.

    As an MVP, you can manage some content within the forums. For example, if someone posted in the wrong category, you can assist by moving it from one category to another. Selecting that square will give you management options on the bottom left of your screen.

    Don't worry, you will not detonate anything! You're safe.
