PowerPoint pictures get added to media

Sometimes, but not always, when I import a PowerPoint file (as images), an image of the first slide gets added to the Group Upload. Today, in fact, it added five copies of that image. I don't want this to happen; I want the group upload to contain only material that I might re-use. Why does this happen sometimes, and how can I prevent it?
