What, exactly, does the 'mute' button mute?

Per the title, I have some discussions like the one pictured 'muted,' yet there they are, right at the top of the list.

So what does the mute button do, if it doesn't mute anything?

Can we have a working mute button so that muted threads don't show up in our list, @Jason Stone (Logos) ?

The mute button is working as intended, but it could use a bit of clarification.

Previously, if you were subscribed to receive email notifications from a post—either by following the forum category or by commenting—there wasn’t a way to stop notifications from just one specific thread. As of last week, you can now mute individual posts. This means you’ll no longer receive notifications from threads you choose to mute, giving you more control over what hits your inbox and notification bell.

Why am I getting Community posts via email in the first place? I never received them until 6/26, and then I started receiving them. I unsubscribed after the second, and I still got another today. From the comments on other posts, it looks like I might not be the only one receiving them unwantedly. Can you please investigate?

Thanks, @Jason Stone (Logos) . But I don't see a clear parallel between those Notification Preferences and what would cause me to receive emails from new Logos Community discussions that I've had no interaction with? Or posts in "English Forum"? None of those match the Notification categories. The footer on the email says "You are receiving this email because you are following category Community Updates." I don't see Community Updates on the Notification Preferences page. I see a few categories on what has had personal interactions "my answer, my question, my ideas, my posts, posts I've participated in, etc), but nothing about general updates. I don't think that's the place where this particular update is managed unless I'm missing something?

@Jeremy Parker, while I have you, and you are looking at that notification preferences page, can you confirm for me that these boxes are not checked and you are not following any categories (at the highlighted link)?

@Jason Stone (Logos) I also received an email about being updated to Level 1. I unsubscribed from that before I received your response. Then in my last comment, I received an email about promotion to Level 2. I appreciate the attempt to engage community, but I am personally more concerned about a busy inbox than level promotions. It looks like the unsubscribe features may be largely broken. Here's the message I see after unsubscribing again from the level promo email:

I just looked at your individual account, @Jeremy Parker, and you are following the Community Updates category forum. If you select "Manage Followed Content" or visit the forum directly (here →), you can select the bell next to the category to unfollow it. There seems to be pros and cons to an extremely personalized interface! I am sorry about the confusion this caused.

And for other notifications, like the advancement of levels, I see that you are unsubscribed so do let me know or email community@logos.com if that persists.

Thank you for bringing this up. As I mentioned earlier, I’ll be looking into why you were subscribed and checking if others are experiencing similar issues with unsubscribing from certain notifications.

I guess I need even more clarification, @Jason Stone (Logos) . I assumed when you said, "This means you’ll no longer receive notifications from threads you choose to mute, giving you more control over what hits your inbox" you meant 'show up in the list.'

Apparently that's not right, because the thread in the screenshot is clearly muted, but still takes up space in the list. I guess I don't know what 'inbox' means. If it only means email, that's not useful to me as I've never gotten email notifications of posts (thankfully!). When I want to read the forums, I log in to the forums. As such, I'd like to mute threads which won't go away but become ugly monstrosities, often simply long diatribes against Logos or its employees.

No one needs to see that, right? ☺️

In the screenshot that you shared, you're not looking at your inbox—either notification bell or email inbox—you're simply looking at the forum's feed of posts, likely the recent activity sorting.

To mute a post does not hide it from your view or experience altogether, it mutes future notifications to either your email inbox or your in-community list of notifications (depending on how you have your preferences set).

I certainly have no issue with hiding threads I don't like. But a thread that keeps getting commented, also keeps getting viewed! People love to read, while sadly shaking their head.

And as much as I criticize FL, I also just move on most often. This morning FL had a ebook for $40; Kindle for $15. Do they care? I didn't … bought the Kindle. And moved on.

"Hiding" threads that you are no longer interested in following, opposed to muting them, sounds like a great feature request for the community! I'll add that to the list.
