It is impossible to tell much of anything about a book from the very limited sample. I always check book reviews. Even if book reviews say it is great, if it adds value to my logos environment given other things I already have, is another question entirely. If you could set up a 1 week loaner protected from copy or export or printing that self destructs in a week, 1 could try the books out first. Now I buy them, try them for a few weeks and if they don't add value I do a return. A trial period would be much cleaner and involve fewer transactions.
