Using quotes in replies

If I want to just use a sentence of someone's reply as a quote, attributed to them, in my reply, how is that done? I can get the entire reply in a quote box, but the cursor is always a 'hand' and won't let me highlight anything once it has embedded the entirereply in a quote box . Highlighting the sentence I want in someone's reply then clicking the quote button still drops the entire reply in the quote box. What's the trick I am missing?

Manually. I simply copy the sentence, put » « around it (greater-than and less-than signs) and paste it at the top of my post. I'll usually add a mention (by doing @Don Awalt for example) so they'll see it.

I'm old enough to have use the old 'bulletin board' systems on the web in the mid-90s, so having to do things manually isn't foreign to me. I can see how some expect automation, and it does speed things up. (Heck, even the old forums would allow a mostly-auto sentence quote…we've digressed.)

Anyway, 'manual' works for me.

As above, cite the author and then paste the sentence. Select the text if on multiple lines and click the icon outside the Comment box (which changes to the X shown below). Click the "" icon as shown.

Then select Quote.
