Print/Export Slow Not Responding
When I try Print/Export the Print/Export window opens but is black and the title bar has (Not Responding). This continues for 30+ seconds the finally becomes active. If I then check an additional section it again goes black and (Not Responding) for 30 seconds or more and then comes back.
This as been happening since printing first was available. Is this normal or is there some setting I need to adjust?
I am running Vista, 2 gig of memory, Core 2 Duo 2.66 Ghz.

Hello Randy,
This isn't typical behavior. A few more details may help us troubleshoot the problem.
1. Do you have the latest beta installed (4.2 Beta 5)?
2. Does this occur with every type of panel you try to print from, such as resources, guides, tools, or does it only occur with a certain panel or resource?
3. Do you have any anti-virus or other software running in the background, either scanning or backing up while you're working in Logos 4?Thanks,
Melissa0 -
Thanks for the response.
1. Yes I have the latest beta.
2. As far as I have seen it happens on every panel.
3. As far as I can tell nothing else is running. Task manager is showing little or no cpu usage.
4. I am running Microsoft Security Essentials as anti virust.
This as happened since printing came out. The printer in on the home network and is attached to my wife's computer;

Randy,
I don't know if this is the problem or not; but I installed MS Security Essentials yesterday and noticed it significantly slowed down my computer. I deleted it and my machine returned to operating at normal speeds.

I am getting very similar symptoms to those described by Randy
Apologies but I hadn't got round to reporting it!

Thanks --- I have run MSE since it came out on several machines and have not had a problem with any other app. I will consider trying uninstalling it this weekend.
Had the initial scan finished? That can take a while and will slow things down.0 -

3. What about memory usage in Task Manager? The black screen could indicate memory is maxed.
4. You might try temporarily disabling MSE just to see if that makes a difference.
Another thing you could check is your video adapter memory and driver.

Thanks for all your help. I may have found at least a work around. My default printer is an HP Laserjet 1000 attached to my wife's XP computer. (Vista and this printer don't like each other if attached to my computer).
I changed the default printer to a PDF print driver on my system and all is good. Switching back causes the not responding problem. I guess I can create a PDF or RTF file and then print.
Again thanks for your help.

Hi Melissa
To test this I setup a layout that just had the NIV opened to John 1, closed Logos and restarted it.
I then opened the ESV to the same reference, selected the first few verses of chapter 1 and clicked the Print/Export button.
It took a few seconds for the Print/Export window to open and about 30 seconds for it to be populated with anything.
Log attached: 7382.Logos4.log
Does this help explain what I am seeing?
Many thanks
Graham

It only confirms what you observed ie. it took at least 27 secs and L4 had enough slack time to perform the sync of Export View Preferences that, on my machine, had to wait until the Export had completed (after 2.5s).
What programs were running in the background (BTW I was running MSE)?

Hi Dave
Thanks for responding.
The only other "user application" at the time was Google Chrome.
In the background would have been Norton 360 and the other standard things you get for Windows 7.
I have just tried it again and observed that during the 30 seconds or so, CPU usage is between 60-70% with most of this being taken by dllhost.exe which I guess is being used by Logos4 to "hand off" some work.
Not much help I'm afraid

dllhost takes a maximum of 6% for a couple of seconds on my machine and seems only to be used by Print/Export. It might pay to contact Customer Support.

Just to flag this is still an issue in 4.2a B3.
It seems to be related to my "Default Printer" setting.
My actual default is an HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 and - with that set as default - I get the 30 seconds delay
If I change the default to be "Microsoft XPS Document Writer" I get a populated Print/Export panel in about 5 seconds.
Does this help in understanding what is going on?

Is the printer connected directly to your computer?

Hi Melissa
No, my computer is connected to a wireless network served by a wireless router to which the printer is connected by a network cable.

Is there any chance of temporarily connecting it directly to your computer, when convenient, just to see if there is a change in performance? That may help us narrow down the problem. If that's possible, and it does make a difference, it would probably be good to get log files for printing from both setups.

Hi Melissa
I'll try but it might take a few days
Thanks, Graham

Or maybe more than a few days [:)]
Melissa, sorry it has taken me so long to try this.
I did it this morning with a direct USB connection to the printer and got exactly the same symptoms.
It takes about 30 seconds for the Print / Export panel to populate and during that time the dllhost.exe program is taking about 50% of the processor.
Log attached for completeness.
Hope this helps track this down.

Does the Print/Export dialog remain open and allow you to print or export? Do you get the same behavior with one version rather than a whole chapter?

Hi Melissa
Yes, the dialog stays open and I can print.
I have just tried it with a single verse and get exactly the same behaviour.
Thanks, Graham

Before I submit logs to development, could you check HP's website for updated software and firmware for your printer? Looks like there's a recent version of the Full Driver.
Also, do you have any delays when bringing up Print Preview in any other programs?

Hi Melissa
Many thanks for this - I hadn't spotted the new driver.
I updated the firmware - which didn't seem to make any difference.
I then installed the latest drivers and it is much quicker - now takes about eight seconds to populate which I am fine with.
Appreciate your support on this

I'm having the same problem in the print/export utility. VERY slow and annoying when exporting. I've searched this thread and it doesn't seem as if there is an easy solution to the problem. Here's hoping one is found soon!

Hi Brad - and welcome to the forums.
As per my post above it was solved for me by updating the drivers for my printer.
What printer are you using / do you have the latest drivers?
Graham

I have two wireless HP printers. I ran the update feature on my HP software after looking at your post, but no update was available. Maybe I'm missing something??
My printers are:
Photosmart C4580
Photosmart Plus B210 series
Any help you can provide is much appreciated.

Hi Brad
Difficult to know if you need updated drivers.
If you go to http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=3418707&lc=en&cc=uk&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=uk (for your C4580) and select "Software and Driver Downloads" and then your operating system you will get to a page which includes the latest drivers for your printer.
Check whether the date / version of this is the same as you have and if not download the update.
This may not help but it will at least check you have the latest versions.
What sort of delay are you getting and do you get it all the time?

When I'm attempting to click on certain "sections" of a book, the program stalls (not responding). It does it when I scroll down to click on more sections. It freezes for several seconds and then wakes up again. Strange.
I'll check on the drivers...maybe that will help.
Thanks.

That seems to be a different problem - I was seeing delays of 30 seconds when trying to open the Print/Export dialog box.
It may be worth starting a separate thread and posting some logs when this happens. If you do this, please state version of Logos you are running.
For details of generating / posting logs please see http://wiki.logos.com/Diagnostic_Logging

Did you find any solution for this issue? I have the same problem when attempting to export a book to PDF. It can take about an hour before I can select the entire book. Actually, it's longer because I gave up 2/3 of the way. I am using L4.5b on a MacBook. This would be a great feature if it actually functioned.
